values are Vedas expressed in universal language: Swami often tells us that there is only one language, the language of the heart. Using the terminology of human values, we are spared the baggage of philosophies, doctrines and isms.Human values reside in the human heart. That is why they are called human. We call them values for they function as guides to thought, word and action. We need to excavate, to dig deep in order to discover the full scope of any human value. Looking at Love - what is love? Is it being with the object of your desires? Is it being needed by another? Is it being struck by Cupid's bow? Is it infatuation with another? Or is it just the idea of true love, which we hear about in so many songs, see in so many movies, and on the television? Is it buying and giving chocolates on Valentines Day? Just what is this phenomenon called love?

The human value of love is not solely attraction to another. How might we examine this or any other value? We look at what it is, and what it is not; we look to how we feel when we practice the value, and how others feel when they practice that value. For example, we can examine what Love looks like in behaviour, what its challenges are, what the benefits of love are, and what Love is related to.When we look at our human values in this manner, we begin to see how deep they are within us, and how much we already know, but do not regularly nor consciously take into consideration when acting on values. Yet, we are all one, we are the one indivisible supreme Atma, and hence, the full experience of humanity is contained in each and every human value. This is why we

look to what Love is, and what it is not; we look to what we feel when we love and what others feel when they love. We look to the challenges of practising love (or any other human value), and the benefits are.Knowing the scope and range of what is contained within our values and bringing all this into our daily repertoire restrains the mind and its reactions. Delineating and practising human values in this manner is skilful behaviour; we are practising self enquiry and are not driven or controlled by what happens to us or what we feel in the outer world. We become more internally aware, and more internally focussed and guided. Our actions in the outer world are then manifesting human values.
