Astrologers also recommend depending on the person's chart and personal circumstances how many carats they should wear. Generally for Ruby, its two and a half carats in weight. Some astrologers would also recommend one carat stones for those who have low budgets, especially if the person is going to buy from them. Agree that Jyotish-grade gems are out of reach for many of us. Yes uparatna (semi-precious stones) will help and they are much cheaper. In the case of uparatna, the carat weights can be 3 carats and much more.
