Re: [saibabanews] Needed information

Sairam Sister Seema,

Once you reach the ashram, please

proceed to N-8 (North Block 8), for registration of Overseas devotees

and allotment of accomodation. North blocks are meant for Overseas

devotees. You said winter, that is Christmas time, normally from

November onwards till mid January there will be lots and lots of

devotees. To the best of my knowledge there is no advance booking for

accomodation in the Ashram. There are private hotels etc. outside the

ashram, where it may be possible to book a room in advance. Wishing

you a very happy visit and blissful darshan of Swami.

In Sai seva,

RE: [saibabanews] Needed information

Hello & greetings from Deena (South Africa) !!!!

First of all thanks for visiting our wesite and your below mail

dated. Indeed we are pleased and will be honored to look after your

hotel arrangement during your forthcoming visit to Puttaparthy from

05/13 Dec 2008.

A little about " Puttaparthy "

A small village in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh, Puttaparthi

is today on the world map. And the person responsible for it

is " Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba " considered as a living God by

millions. Prasanthi Nilayam (Adobe of Peace) is an imposing edifice

at Puttaparthi built by the devotees in reverence to the living God

at his birth place. People seeking peace of mind and solace make a

beeline to this village from all over the world.

Puttaparthi History :

The history of Puttaparthi, as far as the world is concerned, began

on November 23, 1926. Until then it was an obscure speck in the

Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh State. Set in a narrow farming

valley, the village was apparently called Gollapalli, the home of

cowherds, before it became Puttaparthi.

The life story of Sai Baba, as documented by his many disciples, is

so spectacular that it is difficult to know where biography ends and

apocrypha begins. On the other hand, as the believers would counter,

the lives of saints are meant to be extraordinary - to stretch the

limits of our rational daytime understanding, as it were.

The advent of Satyanarayana Raju, the fourth child of Eswaramma and

Pedda Venkappa Raju, seems to have been predicted by several sources,

and is said to have been attended by a series of extraordinary

phenomena. A snake apparently appeared and shielded the infant, and

musical instruments in the house started playing of their own accord!

Satyanarayana Raju appears to have been an exceptional child on all

counts. His gentleness and compassion were legendary in the village.

He liberally distributed food and clothes to the needy, miraculously

manifested chocolates, notebooks and pencils from an empty bag to

share with his schoolmates, and materialized every conceivable fruit

on the tamarind tree that can still be seen on the hill near

Puttaparthi.

Perturbed by the extraordinary behavior of their son, his parents

took him to a local witch doctor who perpetrated various painful

bodily procedures on the young boy to drive the " evil spirit " away.

It was to no avail, however. At the age of 13, on May 28, 1940,

Satyanarana materialised some sweets and flowers, distributed them

among his family members, and made his famous declaration, " I am Sai

Baba " . Not many at this point knew of the earlier Sai Baba, the

legendary mystic of Shirdi (more than 1,000 miles from Puttaparthi),

who had passed away in 1918.

On October 20, 1940, Satyanarayana apparently threw away his

schoolbooks, left his house for good, seated himself on a rock, and

burst into the now well-known Sai bhajan, Manasa bhajare guru

charanam dustara bhava sagara charanam. A local photographer who

captured the moment on his camera was shocked to see a picture of

Shirdi Sai Baba (in his classic pose of right ankle over left knee)

when the negative was developed.

That day marked the beginning of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba mission. He

now dedicated himself entirely to spreading a message of sathya

(truth), dharma (righteousness), shanthi (peace), prema (love) and

ahimsa (non-violence) - the substratum of every religion in the

world - and performing miracles for his ever-increasing tribe of

devotees in an effort to remind them of their inner divinity. The

mission continues to this very day. The pir of Puttaparthi may make

few forays into the outside world. However, the world today is only

too anxious to visit Puttaparthi.

PLACES OF INTEREST INSIDE THE 'ASHRAM'

1. Prasanthi Mandir

This prayer hall was built in 1949. It is the centre of Prasanthi

Nilayam. Omkar Suprabhatam at dawn, daily Bhajans and other spiritual

activities are held in this hall. Ganesh Mandir: This was built

around the same period as the main Mandir and is located at the

entrance of Prasanthi Nilayam. Ganesh is the commander of Shiva's

armym and as Vigneshwara obeisance is made to him for the removal of

all obstacles.

2. Subramanya Mindir

Situated to the south of Ganesh Mandir, was constructed in 1977.

3. Gayathri Mandir

Situated opposite to the " Seva Dal " block this temple was consecrated

by Bhagwan Baba on 9th October 1998. The five faced Goddess,

Gayathri, the mother of the Vedas is the presiding deity here.

4. Sai Kulwant Hall

This is where the daily darshn takes place besides many other

festivities. Divine discourses are delivered here. It has a seating

capacity of about 20,000. On the northern side entrance to Sai

Kulwant Hall, the exquisitely carved icons in white marble of Sri

Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman were consecrated by Bhagwan on 30th

September 1999.

5. Meditation Tree

The banyan tree planted by Bhagwan has also a metal plate with

inscription done with Divine Sankalpa embedded by him at the roots in

1950. Located on the left of the road uphill to the Spiritual success

of those who meditate under it. Devotees are allowed to meditate

during the day time only.

6. Spiritual Museum

It is located on the top of a hillock on the southern side of the

Ashram-centered around the experience of spirituality in man's

evolution. It displays fascinating artifacts to convey the eternal

message of saints and sages of all religions of the world. Legends of

Bhagwan's early life and his declaration of Avatarhood are emphasised

in the displays. Sprawling over 20,000 sqft., it is designed to evoke

the spiritual quest of man, regardless of chronology or country. The

architecture of this building is in shikara style and is also the

administrative building of the university. The museum is open between

10:00 AM and 12 noon daily.

7. Sarva Dharma Stupa

This 50 feet feet high pillar celebrating the unity of all religions

is located on the south of Poorna Chandra Auditorium and was built in

November 1975 on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of

the advent of the Avatar and the World conference of the Sri Satya

Sai Seva organizations held in Prasanthi Nilayam.

ACCESS :

degrees north and a longitude of 70 degrees east. The township that
