Ipray to Thee to make my intellect serene and bright and enlightened'.The Gayatri is the Universal Prayer, enshrined in the Vedas, the most ancient scripture of man. The Gayatri mantra has in it the validity of the Vedas. It contains the essence of Vedic teachings. The Gayatri mantra is considered Vedasara, the essence of prayer fosters and sharpens the knowledge-yielding faculty. As a matter of fact, the four Maha-vakyas, or Core-Declarations enshrined in the four Vedas are implied in the Gayatri mantra. Each of the four Vedas has a core axiom enclosed in it;"Thath Thwam Asi" (That Thou Art), "Prajnaanam Brahma" (Consciousness is Brahma), "Ayam Atma Brahma" (This self is Brahma) and "Aham Brahmasmi" (Iam Brahmam). When all these are synthesised, the Gayatri emerges.Mother Gayatri is described as "Chhandasaam Maathaha"-the Mother of all the Vedas. One meaning of Gayatri is that it is a mantra which protects or fosters the 'Gayas' or jivis. If chanted regularly, all the merit that would be obtained by the recital of Vedas, are earned.
