This is because we are unclean due to the effects of past karma. Moreover, we are being taught everyday about the lure and desirability of money, fame, power, and enjoyment. This produces lasting impression on the subtle body which is beyond mind and intellect and which survives physical existence. We have to think in different directions and live a different way of life to smudge the impact of these unwholesome effects. This different way of thought, action and life is called Saadhana. The body is purified on account of selfless service and benevolent acts. This helps in obliterating the impressions of past karmas on mind. When the mind is sublimated, the seeds of devotion can be sown and nurtured within it. The barren and soil of selfish thoughts and deeds is not fit for sowing of seeds of intense love of God. This must be properly understood by the aspirants. Selfishness is a road leading in altogether opposite direction than the road to God or liberation. A man approaches God step by step, when he removes the pains of others, assists men in distress and knows the God inherent in others minds.Similarly, it is essential to install the memory and the idol of God in the heart by incessant recitation of name and meditation on the form. This enables the subtle body (that outlives physical death) to wipe off the imprint of selfishness and to replace it by the image of God. (from Shri Sai Leela, November 1989).CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE: Two hundred rupees to Mrs. KhapardeOn 1st February 1912, Shri G.S. Khaparde, an intimate devotee of Sai Baba wrote, "Today evening when we assembled at the musjid before Sayin Baba started on his stroll, Sayin Baba told Mr. Dixit to give two hundred rupees to my wife who was then shampooing the legs of Sayin Saheb. This order was unaccountable. Has it come to this that I have to be maintained by charity!!! I prefer death to this. Sayin Saheb I think wished to curb and finally destroy my pride so he is getting me used to poverty and the charity of others". To understand the true feeling of Shri Kharpade, a little background is necessary. At that time, he was the chairman of the reception committee of the All India Congress and was working very closely with Shri Lokmanya Tilak. Shri Khaparde was a distinguished attorney, a prominent freedom fighter, an eloquent speaker and an intellectual. He practiced law in Amraoti. The household of Dadasaheb Khaparde was a large one and at one time it consisted of fifty people including his family, his three children and their families, three families who were given shelter, about 12-15 students pursuing their studies, servants, cooks, chauffeurs and three guest families on an average. In short, He was a royalty! However, Shri Khaparde was one of the humblest devotees of Sainath. It is said, Noolkar, Booty and Khaparde were the only devotees who never spoke a word in Baba's presence and they were always meek and humble.Subsequently in 1924, when this was published in the Sai Leela magazine, Shri Khaparde reflects on this entry in his diary and offers the following clarification: " I turned up the diary for 1st February, 1912 and read the passage indicated by you. It correctly represents my feelings. Our Sadguru Sayin Maharaj gave the order. Being omniscient, he knew everything including all my innermost thoughts and never insisted on the order being carried out. Now that my attention has been drawn to the matter it appears to me that my wife then did not like the life of labor and poverty. Kakasaheb Dixit had accepted the (such a) life and was happy. So Sain Maharaj asked him to give two hundred rupees i.e. poverty and patience to my wife." Mrs. Khaparde was a devout person who had a strong faith in Baba and spent time, serving Baba with love and devotion (Shri Sai Satcharitha, Chapter 27 in the English version by Nagesh Vasudev Gunaji). Yet, as Shri Khaparde noted, Mrs. Khaparde needed the right message on the virtues of humility and patience. Again it was made and some other person died in my house. I cried a lot in front of Saibaba thinking that I will never get His blessings. This year I visited Shirdi with my whole family and grandmother, it was great experince. EXPERIENCE OF DEVOTEES: Jayantilal PatelBaba thanks for giving me another life. I had been suffering from kidney failure since 2000. After going through all the treatments over the seven years there was one point, where I had given up hope of living. One day I was reading Sai Satcharita and suddenly a thought came. I prayed to Baba to relieve me from this misery. One day I had a call from the hospital calling me for check up and there was a possibility of kidney transplant. After checkup, I was told that the transplant would go ahead. I had the transplant and I was heavily sedated. Two days later, I was woken up to say that the donated kidney was not functioning. I might have to go back to operating theatre to remove the donated kidney. This was a big shock. I suddenly closed my eyes and prayed to Baba. I was unconscious for some time. There was a miracle, the next day in the morning the consultant came back and woke me. I have good news, a miracle has happened, suddenly the kidney has started functioning, we don't know the reason for the normal functioning. I smiled and prayed to Baba for the miracle. It has been a big relief on me and my family. I once again pray to bestow Your krupa on my family.PadminiTwo years back, when I went to Shirdi, I did not know about aarthis and I did not see any aarthis. This August, I went to Shirdi with my mom and dad. I had the wish of seeing all Baba's aarthis. As I wished, I saw Shej(night), Kakad(morning) and Madhyana(noon) aarthis without any problem. For Dhoop(evening) aarthi, we went early at 4:15 pm. So we decided to sit for Mugha (Face) darshan and thought we will sit there till the evening aarthi is over. The view was so good that we could see Baba completely. At 6:00 pm, security guards came and asked us to move out of the hall which we didn't know that they will do. My mom and I felt very bad thinking that we couldn't see aarthi though we came soon. But we started to go and stand in the line again. Exactly with 10 people before us, the gate was closed. So we thought that we could get only this much and we sat there watching the aarthi on Television. Just after two minutes the aarthi was started, they opened the gate and let us into the main hall. I and my mom got a place where we could see Baba nicely. Of all the aarthis, we got a very nice view in the evening aarthi only. Singing the aarthi in the middle of so many people was really a wonderful experience and we are thankful to Baba for giving us the opportunity to see all the four aarthis. During one of the aarthis, I wanted to keep my and my sister's horoscope at Baba's feet and I thought of doing it before Baba, displayed on TV. But I was not able to reach the TV as it was too high for my height. But suddenly there was a devotee who was very tall. He took the horoscopes from my hand and kept in Baba's feet and we felt really happy for that. Baba, thanks for the trip and we are eagerly waiting for the next trip. Only You know when that will happen. More than me, my mom wants to come and see You every year.
