During one of my LFCs, I visited Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar in

1984. Rishikesh being the abode of so many rishis and munis, really

attracted me very much. Sudden emotions flow up that I should join

any one of the maths there and spend remaining part of my life

blissfully there. Of course, that has not materialised yet. When I

saw for the first time, the mighty Ganges with the chilly and

thunderous water flowing at Haridwar, I got astonished. After having

a dip at Ganges, during the Sandhyavandan, I offered a tarpan to

Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba also as part of the Navagraha Keshavadi

tarpanam, also for the first time in my life which of course formed

part of my Sandhyavandanam later. At that particular moment, a story

read by me in the puranas came to my mind. Once you have a dip at

Ganges, all of one's sins are washed away and the person becomes

sinless. When this thought came to my mind, for the day, I felt very

happy that I have washed off all my sins.

During the night, Bhagwan Baba appeared in my dream in which he told

me : 'Well, you had a dip at Ganges and feel that you have washed

away all of your sins; but, you have to continue to do all the

sadhanas which you are practising now for some more time'.

The message I got from the dream is that 'despite our taking dips at

Ganges and washing off our sins, our sadhanas have to be continued to

ultimately reach Him'.

Devotee friends of this group may please respond if they get some

other views/message on this.

I would like to write a little on what i learned about taking bath in ganges and washing away our sins.

For this v need to understand history . In olden days going on a pilgrimage to kasi etc and taking bath and removing the sins ws told. It is not by bathing in ganges but all our sins are washed by the long distance journey to this places. In olden days people used to go only by walking. So nights they spent their time in dharmashalas. When people from different communities used to gather and sit and discuss their experiences. So by the time you reach ganga and have a holy bath the transformation has taken place due to meeting people , knowledge gained and sadhana to undertake this journey bearing all the troubles. So Nowadays do you think this will work out. V have a confortable journey have a dip and sins are washed. No so swami in the dream has told you correctly to continue with the sadhana.

This is little what i learned during my human values diploma course. So if anything wrong please forgive me and correct me.

Dear Sairam

 Sri. Srinivasa rao is right;

The dip in the Ganges is the starting point to your mental change. If you are

conducting yourself bad, realize your mistake and want to start a new

good life you take a dip in Ganga/any other 6 holy rivers and make a vow that

you will not commit the same mistakes again.

Sri Ramkrishna Paramahamsa says:As and when you enter the Ganga, your sins will

fly from your body and sit on the tress on the banks;as and when you come out of

Ganga the sins will again descend on you;change of heart to nobility is

important than mere dip in Ganga

We have this theory called Psychosomatic;we want our sins forgiven, the problem

is we want the easy way out. we need to be responsible and held accountable. we

don't understand how a wonderful loving GOD/GODDESS can create a baby born

deformed, crippled or disease.our heart goes out to them.we realize this could be

something carried over from a previous life. now it makes sense, washing yourself

in any river will not remove your sin.only asking your GOD/GODDESS to forgive

you and be willing to accept what ever punishment is fair.

Sairam Brother.

From a view point, Water & Mind is closely related.

Water brings both external and internal purity, if we can contemplate

'Varuna God' during the bath.

We get new, fresh thoughts after a dip in any Holy river (for that

matter) Infact those days, brahmins advised to stay near a river

so that he cleanses his Body, thrice a day for performing 'thrikala sandhyavandanam'

Karma Siddhantha (merits/demerits acquired due to actions) and Punar Janma

siddhantha (repeat births) theories are very unique of Vedantha philosophy.

Swami advises through dreams are motivation to do right actions. Infact its because

your Bhakthi, you get such dreams.

If we are not attached to any action/its results and still be performing actions for the sake

of it, then One has to know that he/she is marching towards the Goal called Gnana. Infact its very

rare and difficult to achieve. Attaining Gnana, the Gnani sees this World/Universe as Picture and Unreal.

It doesnot create any thought-ripple in his mind.

For this very reason of uplifting the entire Humanity, our Beloved Avatar is descended on earth.

We all sai devotees are fortunate and we should know (we should strive hard) that

we will have only few Janmas (if we follow and live His message).

Love and Sairam.
