Namaste Indira,

 

Sumeru means 'mountain'. Technically speaking, it means the 109th bead in a

mala. We chant mantras for 108 times using japa mala.

 

when we reach the last 108 bead, we stop. Thus the sumeru indicates we should

not cross or touch the 109th bead in a jaap mala.

 

Yes knots can be strung with the beads or not at all. It depends whether you

would like the knots to be strung on your mala.
