Guest guest
Namaste Narasimhaye, The below message from Shri J.K Dasgupta, states that the first line of the Gayatri Mantra cannot be chanted without initiation. Is this True? or rather does this hold correct in this age where it is so difficult to find a true Guru who can initiate us. Iam sure many people must have started chanting various mantras which they might have found online or as advised by learned people like you in this group. Would appreciate you advice, Aum Sree GauriShankaray Namah--- On Fri, 11/28/08, jk.dasgupta <jk.dasgupta wrote: jk.dasgupta <jk.dasguptaRBSC : mantra for God Mahalaxmi and Venus Date: Friday, November 28, 2008, 3:35 PM Dear Sivakumar, Just wondering why you are doing Gayatri Mantra? It has nothing to do with Mahalakhsmi or venus. 1. Gayatri mantra purifies our past karmas, improves intelligence & health 2. 25% of the japa goes to the account of our Pitris (means all fore-fathers & fore-mothers on both father's & mother's sides) 3. Without initiation, one should not recite the first line `Om Bhur Bhubah Swah' 4. There are misconcept that Gayatri mantra cannot be recited by ladies. It is a completely wrong idea. In olden days, hindu ladies were also used to wear sacred thread and used to get initiated in Gayatri mantra. Then, the sacred thread were worn by all - irrespective of cast. Guest guest
Namaste Anil, There are many different sampradayas and each teach different things to their followers or disciples. Then we also have unorthodox Hindus or Smarta Hindus who are not strict followers in the sense that they simply do everything with Bhakti and see the results. If there are no results, they move on to another method. Without trying, we never know. Perhaps Shri J.K Dasgupta Ji was just trying to give advice from the view point of what he had been taught or initiated into. Only he can tell us if he feels to do so. Like you and I both are fond of saying "there is only one summit, but many ways to reach it". Hence we have Shaivites, Vaishnavites, Smarta (Liberal) Hindus, Shaktas, tantrics, kaulas, nathas, sects, cults, etc. Each individual will follow his own way as guided by Upaguru if one cannot find a real live guru. You are very right that in this day and age, its hard to find a genuine guru. There is no right way or wrong way. If one decides to follow one way and it doesn't work, he/she can try another way. With all due respect to Shri J.K Dasgupta Ji, traditionally the Gayatri mantra is chanted including the first line. We all will find that most places, book, cds, etc, mention the first line. Shri Swami Vishnu Devananda who is a direct disciple of H.H. Shri Swami Sivananda Maharaj mentioned in his book that "Gayatri is a verse of specific length and meter. Although the Gayatri mentioned is one of the most sacred of Vedic Mantras, and is called "Mother of the Vedas" this verse form is also used to praise and invoke many of the deities." The Gayatri verse form he talked about was: OM Bhur Bhuvah Swah,Tat Savitur VarenyamBhargo Devasya DheemahiDhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat. His excellent book can be found at Rudra Centre: Meditation and Mantras by Swami Vishnu Devananda This book contains: Why Meditate, japa meditation (theory, practice), obstacle to meditation, experiences in meditation, etc. Another book that is good is: Remedies through Mantras This book is compendium on Tantra, Mantra and Yantra. The book is purely based on old Sanskrit classics. The author has tried to associate the mantra shastra with astrology. It deals with mantras for worship, sadhana, appeasing of dieties, will power, concentration and many other aspects of mantra sadhana. The above 2 books give a lot of insight into mantras and mantra sadhanas. A few people whom I recommended the books to, said that while reading them, they felt as if they were studying under a guru or the book was giving them darshan of the author. Very interesting!
