It would have passed in front of a lot of other people too. Don't worry about what your friend told you. Its actually auspicious as snakes are also a symbol of Lord Shiva as He is often depicted as wearing snakes or cobras around his neck. They are a symbol of Kundalini too. Would suggest you visit a Shiva temple to give thanks for His symbol appeaaring before you and thus blessing you with its Darshan when you saw it.
