translation of the meaning of Sri Lakshmi Ashtottara Sata Nama stotram.

Meaning Of The Sloka:

I offer my pranaams to goddess Lakshmi

She holds Padmas (flowers) in Her hands.

bears pleasant face.

bestows sowbhagya(welfare) and bhaagya(riches)

she wears Abhaya mudra(sign of assurance of fearlessness) sign on

her hands.

She is adorned by different kinds of precious stones like pearls and

diamonds.

She fulfills desires and aspirations of Her devotees

She is worshipped by Hari(Vishnu),Hara(Siva),Brahma and so many other

Gods.

She possesses stocks of Lotus flower,Sankha(conch),flower etc. by her

sides.

She is always an embodiment of shakti(power).

riches,to the residents there of! please shower your grace on me.

 

 

 

lakshmi = goddess of wealth, beauty and luck, wife of Vishnu. Symbol of

prosperity, victory and all positive flourisment,

 

growth etc.

Every name that describes the attributes of goddess Lakshmi is also to be

considered tat the same she will shower on te

 

devotee who worsips her and seeks refuge at her lotus feet and hence make te

devotee attain the same attribute or capability

MEANING

------

1.

 

You can do and undo things (any thing!). You are source of all knowledge. You

shower blessings on all

devoted, for the well-being of devotees. For those who concentrate on you

with focus You are embodiment of riches

fulfillng aims & wishes(like SURABHI-COW). I pray to your super natural and

enlightened soul form.

 

 

2.

You are the form of speech (pronouncing august). You are sitting in the

lotus flower and you yourself are

so tender like a padma itself. You are holy and purest of the pure (forms

in universe). You have the ability to

absorb and imbibe everything /[whatever is offered] (in the universe). You are

form of wealth or virtue (letter dha means

 

wealt or virtue, swa=yourself). You are so pure like divine nectar. You are

nothing but fruitfulness or success.

You are perceived in the form of gold.Oh mother godess Lakshmi! You being

the form of all powerfullness (you keep us

 

ever strong), you being calm like nigt (you keep us in lull like night).

 

 

3. You are freedom and at the same time bondage(for tose wo know your real

nature you are liberation and for tose who do not

 

know your actual nature tink of you as just wealt and get bonded yearning for it

all throug the life!).

You are glowing. You are form of earth (vasu+dha = since earth is an embodiment

of all wealthy natural ores, elemnets, energy

 

etc. including gold, including all innumerable valuable things in the seas

etc---represents prosperity) and you are bearing

 

gold(vasu) [ornaments]. You reside in kamalaa(flower that blooms during day).

You are in a divine feminine form having eyes

 

that grant wishes. You are born out of anger towards wicked.

 

Such godess! I am bowing to thee.

 

 

4. You are always giving grace. You are intellct. You free us from sins. You are

the consort of lord vishnu.

You relieve us from sorrow.You are eternal. You are enlightening universe(this

nama comes for second time). You annihilate

 

distress of worlds.

 

5. I pray to thee. Dharma(destined duty) dwells in you. You are kind hearted.

You are universal mother.

You like lotus(padma) flowers. You hold lotus flowers. Your eyes are like lotus

flowers. You are so beautiful and enticing as

 

lotus flowers.

 

6. You are born from lotus flower. You are glowing with a face like padmaa/lotus

flower. You are dearer to Padma naabha(lord

 

vishnu having padma in HIS Navel). You are extremely attractive. You are wearing

garland of padmaas/lotus flowers. Oh!

 

goddess you are like a lotus flower spreading scent of padma/lotus.

 

SPECIAL NOTE:

===============

There is a reason why the author stresses the importance of the lotus flower so

many times repetitively and claims tat Godess

 

Lakshmi is a represented truly and verily in the form of Lotus itself.

In Humdu mytology and Yoga Lotus is very sacred and special flower. It

represents the divine Yoga naadis/nerves and shat

 

chakras through the spinal cord. The stem represents the " Sushumna Nadi/nerve "

that is exactly at the enter of the diameter

 

of the spinal cord and travels all the way from the bottom to the top. The top

flower above the stem represents the

 

" sahasrara " chakra on te top of the head. Yogi attains various

sddhis/supernatural powers as each " chakra " is released or

 

conquered trough saadhana. That success results in various forms of super

natrural achievements (examples: without any formal

 

education can speak any language in te world fluently and can orate and has full

command on speeh and poetry etc. Can

 

materialize items out of no where. etc etc. But as sages preach, " these sidhdhis

are stumbling blocks in the royal path to

 

salvation " .

 

7. You are spreading sacred odour (i.e. you are represented throug sacred

incense and fragrance). You are so pleasing and are

 

always showering grace. You are having graceful face as if giving bounties. You

are shining with myriad lights.

I am praying to thee Oh! godess Lakshmi. You have a face that is glowing like a

full moon. You are showring peaceful,

 

soothing white light like moon. You are the sister of moon(born along with moon

and others while angels and demons churned

 

the ocean)

 

8. You are having four hands. You are moon -like. You have another name INDIRA.

You are so cool as moon. You are creating

 

pleasantness and happiness. You are invigorating.

You are (siva) an embodimen tof noble and auspicious things. (sivakari) You

are the giver of good things in life.

 

you are an exemplary woman and an ideal wife.

 

 

9. You are the purest form. You are the divine mother of the whole world. You

are energiging. You are the destroyer of

 

poverty.

You are (preeti=love, puskarini=divine pond with sacred water to cleanse

boundless sins of devotees) an abundant source

 

of love.

 

You are peaceful and represent stability, peace and calmness.

You are clad in white dress and are adorned with white garlands.

You cause well-being, prosperity, growth and wealth. (Sreem is the sacred

syllable-beejaakshara- representing goddess

 

Lakshmi).

 

10. You are resplendent as sun and hence you glorify the lives of your devotees

(Ba + Kari = glow + giver/cause)

You reside under BILWA (tree) (which is endearing to lord SIVA)

You are always awarding benefits and boons (vara= boon or anything that is

great/salient) that are always on the rise

 

(aarohaam = increasingly) and abudant in quantity, numbers and volume.

You are highly acclaimed, reputed and famous in the universe and hence you

cause reputation/fame (for those who worship

 

her).

You are mother earth (Vasundhara-this name is used second time here by the

author- explained earlier). You are complacent of

 

good or bad of devotees and as great forgiveness. [another way we can mean-

" udaara " = shresta i.e.- highest quality +

 

" anga " = body-parts, meaning se has great and healthy body].

 

 

You are dynamic and ever moving from place to place like a deer. Meaning,

goddess Lakshmi is very difficult to be pleased

 

and even if she blesses one, she always can turn things upside down provided one

does not maintain continuity in

 

bhakti/devotion and dedication to Her Lotus feet.

 

(haemamaalineem) You are adorned with golden garlands (author repeated this

name here second time).

 

11. You are the giver of wealth and food grains.

You are nothing but the ultimate success (siddhi) or ever readiness due to

fulfilment.

You are specially soft and kind hearted towards ladies/women (straina -> stree =

woman) and cause/give good and desirable

 

things.

 

(nrupa+vaesma+gata+aanandaam) You feel happy by entering the

Emperor's(nrupa) house(vesma). [You dwell in emperor's

 

palaces....meaning you are personified by the geity and prosperity of emperors's

a token of which being an example like

 

possessing palaces etc.]

 

You are goddess Laksmi's form which bestows boons and gives gold / riches.

 

 

 

12. Not only bestowing good,you are personification of good virtues.

You are encircled by golden aura

You are daughter of ocean-God. You give victory and in fact you are victory

yourself.

You are goddess with good omens and who bestwos them on all. You reside in lord

Vishnu's chest( heart).

 

13.You are consort of vishnu. You are with blissful eyes.

 

You are always coupled (take refuge in) with NARAAYANA(VISHNU).

You dismantle poverty and will ward off /avoid all calaamities.

One, (VIDWAAN)by knowing the meaning, who chants this Lakshmi astottara Satam 3

times a day (at morning, noon and evening),

(VIJITENDRIYAH= vi+jita+indriyaha) by conquering senses; will be

rectified(DHWAMSANAM KRUTWAA) of poverty(DAARIDRYA) and will

 

attain( AAPNOTI) everything(SARWAM) with least effort(AYAYATNATAH).
