Its believed as per Garuda Puranam, according to the actions performed during this birth and in the past births, The soul (jeevatma) covered with its Vasanas (bundle of desired thoughts of good/bad) travels to the other planes called Hiranya Loka stays for some time, where it meets (according the balance sheet of Good/Bad actions) illumined people (Devas) and come back to the earth to pursue the actions with a manifested body. People who have crossed Hiranya Loka (Subtle Plane) goes to Aditya Loka (Sun Plane) and the soul dont return to Hiranya loka, and earth. From Aditya Loka (Sun plane) it finally enters to the Brahma Loka, where the jiva actually originated from and merging with it is called Liberation. These all three Planes are at higher side, as well there are other planes (lokas) which are neutral and lower planes like Hell, through which the Jeevatma (individual soul) stays/travels and gain experience both good and bad. Hence the Mind plays a vital role and reason for both Bondage (encased with body) and Liberation (full light). Mind and Prana (vital energy which moves the earth, maniested as Breath in Human) are like Twins. By holding the Breath for a longer time, we see there is no mind-body actions. By holding Mind-thoughts, the Breath almost comes to a control. Sage Ramana Maharishi, taken the the last route, travel to the source of mind by holding the thoughts and found out there is nothing called Mind as such. Annihilation of Mind is Mukthi. Definitely the soul (with mind-vasanas) travel with Air to other planes called Hiranya Loka, Aditya Loka and Brahma or Satya Loka.
