There is no way to tighten the rings except the way you have suggested

i.e. tying a thread around the rings. The other way to reduce the

size of the ring is to take them to a jeweller and having him make new

rings of the correct size. This is acceptable for the silver ring, but the

way gold prices are shooting up, you will incur a sizeable loss both

on wastage and making charges. There is also a risk of the emerald

getting damaged unless this is done very carefully. I would hence

suggest that you wait for some time. Maybe in a year's time these

rings woud perfectly fit you.

If you've had the rings for a long time, it can perhaps be the temperatures of your environment that may make fingers expand or smaller at different times of the year. If this is the case, its better not to tighten them in case you will need to make them loose again later. Big jewelry shops don't normally reset rings if you didn't buy the stones from them.
