Sri Datta devam - the Sunday Datta kakada harati bhajan -lyrics and meaning:

gives a synopsis of the story of Lord Dattaatreya.

Refrain:

Sri Datta devam shirasaa namaami

Sri Datta raajam manasaa smaraami

With my fully bowed down head I offer most reverential worship to God Datta.

With all my heart and mind I meditate upon Lord Datta will complete

concentration.

Sri atri ghanayoga phalabhoota deham

Sitarashmi durvaasa sahajaata yugmam

Nijamaatru bhava bandha nirmoka daksham

Nija bhakta rakshaartha sahyaadri vaasam

Datta has incarnated in a human body as a reward for the great penance performed

by sage Atri. He was born as a sibling to the Moon and to sage Durvaasa. He

skillfully removed the spiritual ignorance from the mind of His own mother

Anasuya and blessed her with liberation from the cycle of birth and death. In

order to dedicate His life for the spiritual protection of mHis devotees, He

decided to dwell in the Sahya mountain range.

Jambhaakhya samhaara paripaalitendram

Veda pradaanopa krita brahma devam

Prahlaada paripaalam avadhoota roopam

Yati vesha sambuddha yadu raaja raajam

Lord Datta helped Indra, the Lord of heaven, who was being persecuted by the

demon Jambha, to kill the demon and regain his kingdom. When Brahma the Creator

forgot the Vedas, because of the power of Maya, illusion, Lord Datta restored

the knowledge of the Vedas to him. Appearing to the aged king Prahlaada who was

in search of spiritual Truth, in the form of an avadhoota, Lord Datta cleared

his doubts. Appearing in the form of an ascetic, He gave enlightenment to king

Yadu.

Sri vishnudatta arpita aatmeeya mantram

Nija bodhanonmochita aalarka raajam

Sri kaartaveeryaakhya vara daana veeram

Bhriguraama bodhita tripuraa rahasyam

To the devotee Vishnu Datta, Lord Datta gave initiation in powerful mantras,

which he used selflessly to protect noble souls from difficulties. Datta gave

enlightenment to King Alarka, the son of yogini Madaalasa. Datta blessed his

foremost devotee Kartaveeryaarjuna, who was born with crippled arms with

innumerable wonderful boons such as: one thousand powerful arms, spiritual

enlightenment, the eight superhuman powers of yoga, and also made him an emperor

of the entire earth. Lord Datta removed the burning guilt from the mind of Sage

Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who had caused immense bloodshed on

earth during his divine mission of removing the arrogance of the evil kings.

Lord Datta blessed him with peace by way of initiation into Tripura Rahasyam -

teaching of the secret doctrine of transcending the three's or triads - the

three gunas, satva, rajas, and tamas, the three kaalas, past, present, and

future, etc.

Kaarunya paripoota nripa dharma keertim

Sadbhadra sheelee kritaatmeeya bhaktam

Aayur mahaa raaja vara daana dheeram

Aajanma paripushta nahushaadhi raajam

Lord Datta, in His infinite compassion, protected the erring King Dharma Keerti

at the time of his death, who, even after receiving spiritual truths from Guru

Datta, still suffered from bad company and a wavering mind. In his following

birth, Datta gave him knowledge of his past lifetime's grievous mistakes, and

made him a steadfast devotee. Datta blessed King Ayu with the noble son,

Nahusha. When Nahusha was abducted by a demon even as an infant, Datta gave the

grieving Ayu spiritual enlightenment to help him to overcome the unbearable

distress. Datta protected Nahusha right from his childhood.

Sreepaada Sree vallabhaakaara gamyam

Narasimha yati raaja raajaavataaram

Sree sachchidaananda nitya prakaasham

Sree sachchidaananda nitya prakaasham

Lord Datta has incarnated as Sreepaada Sreevallabha, as Sree Narasimha

Saraswati, and now in His eternally effulgent form of Sat, Chit, Aananda,

Existence, Consciousness, and Bliss, in the human incarnation as Sri Sri Sri

Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji.
