Namaste Taj,

Its fine to begin on the new version of the mantras; there will be no

harm. You will still be along the same 'mantric wavelength or

vibration'. The version I've given you is a tantric version which

works much faster than others because it contains the Gayatri: Om Bhu

Bhu Swaha....etc, and then ends in Joom Hoom Om. You are right about

it being reversed. That is the whole point. It begins and ends with

Om. And the beeja mantras are sealed in between the Maha-mantra.

This the version a lot of initiated persons use and seldom written

down in books. This particular way is mostly from Guru to Shishya.

From books and other people who are not initiated, you will always

get other variations.

The name of the person should be said before you commence the entire

108 rounds of the mantra. It can be said with simple words like " I'm

sincerely chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for _______(so and so)

and hope/pray that Lord Shiva will _______(state your good wishes).

State the sentence with bhakti.

Regarding facing east in your case, the deities will understand and

forgive. Another reason that they will give backing is that the

Mahamantra is all encompassing and since it begins with Om and ends

with Om, it will reverberate around the entire puja room if not the

whole household to give blessings as well. A person who performs

mantra for another with bhakti gets merit as will his household.

However, remember that should you feel extremely uncomfortable while

facing east, please write in again.

Om Namah Shivaya

be powerful. The thing is I have already started saying the other

version of mantra for the last two weeks.....is it wise to change it

now?.....or should I start a new 40/45/90 day sadhana with your

version? The only variations I can see in my mantra and the one you

suggest is that in my one their seems to be more " Om " (infact in

front of each word - Om Hoom, Om Joom, Om Sah etc etc). Also the last

part of the mantra in your version is " reversed " - i hope you

understand what i mean. I don't understand why their are many

versions, but as long as this version is the " official one " I am

happy to say what you have suggested.

you should state the other persons name with a sentence before your

begin. I am confused on this...should the name be said before each

mantra or before each time I chant the whole 108?....if it is for the

mantra then I am guessing it would go like this

Joom Hoom Om

that if I changed my position to east, my back would face the puja

alter,....but this you have said is good as it gets backing from

gods. I was just a little unsure and thought it would be

disrespectful and rude for me to turn my back towards the dieties. I

shall now face east.
