The itras can be used in the method you've mentioned, i.e. directly

applied to the yantra while chanting its mantra.

 

Itra can also be applied at the four corners and in the middle of a

yantra if a person feels attuned to also work with (obtain blessings

from) the 5 elements. Others use a cotton wool ball and pour a

couple of drops of itra on it, then apply to the entire yantra.

 

As itras are concentrated, they can also be diluted with 'unscented,

cold-pressed carrier oils' such as almond and jojoba which are good

for the skin.
