Dear Sai Devotees, We continue with Sumathi Satakam............. ---------------------- 21. O Sumati! Don’t eat unripe fruits, don’t badmouth relatives and friends, don’t back off from battlefield, and don’t ignore Guru’s orders. The author conveys important character traits in this poem. 22. O Sumati! Each village should have one karanam (writer) and one judge; if more are present, it leads to chaos and confusion. In the

agriculture-based economy of 13th century India, each village needed writers who documented the various farmlands owned by people, and judges were needed to resolve disputes. The author observes that only one of each was necessary to maintain calm and peace. 23. O Sumati! Not letting go of an unloving wife, or unloving husband, or an unloving friend is the characteristic of an unwise fool; it is not the birth into a certain caste that makes one unwise. The cowherd caste was considered a gullible caste since many of them believed whatever the landlords told them. The author makes the statement that wisdom is not related to the caste we are born into. 24. O Sumati! Just as carts can come in ships, and ships in carts, the richness and poverty take turns in time. No one stays rich or poor all the time. Ships sailing in water are considered a symbol of comfort and size, while carts which travel on the ground are a symbol of hard work. -------------------- OM SAI RAM!
