Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta In the olden days books like " Ramayana " used to be taught to boys and girls in their childhood. Thus the entire epic was memorised and even without understanding the meaning of the Books this divine vibrations used to pass through the heart of the children. Gradually this practice disappeared. His Holiness Sri Swamiji advises that this age old practice be restored and thus " Satguru Charitra Samgraha " was written by Sri Krishnamurthy. By the Divine Grace of His Holiness Sri Swamiji I will attempt over the next few weeks to present these 108 slokas in Sanskrit with English translations. Sage Bharadwaja who was deeply attached to spiritual knowledge, enlarged his progeny for the continued propagation of virtuous living. His ancestral family was full of scholars and diligent practitioners of the Vedic rites. And into that family was now born Naradsimha Sastry, a sincere observer of Vedic principles and regular performer of penance. While still young, Narasimha Sastry lost his wife, and this made him to go on a pilgrimage. He visited eventually the holy places of confluence of the 3 pious rivers, the Kaveri, the Akavathi and the Gupta Gamini In that place , among hills and thick jungle, there lived Linganna, a householder belonging to the lineage of Haritasa Gotra. Linganna was the grandson of a Yogi, who bore the same name, and lived in a place called Sogala. He was doing the business of selling charcoal and for that purpose he lived in the forest. He was a magnanimous Brahmin and extended hospitality to Narasimha Sastry, the pilgrim who visited the holy Sangam. Linganna had a hospitable nature and Jayalakshmi was one of his daughters. She was very pious. She was blessed with beauty like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, the soft-spokeness of Saraswati, the goddess of learning and a magnificent complexion like Gauri, Lord Shiva’s consort. She was indeed like a second Lopamudra Devi, wife of sage Agastya. The holy place was known to be frequented by the unseen Sage Dattatreya and for this reason, people who seek a quiet place come there to do penance. Jayalakshmi used to serve such visitors with diligence. to be continued........
