Guest guest
AUM SAI RAM Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says on the Ramayana – "No other story in human history has had such a profound impact on the mind of Man. It transcends the milestones of history and the boundaries of geography. It has shaped and sublimated the habits and attitudes of generations. It has become a curative corpuscle in the bloodstream of Mankind over vast areas of the globe. It has struck root in the conscience of people, probing and prompting them along the paths of Truth, Love, Righteousness and Peace." Salutations to Sri Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu! Rama Nawami or the birthday of Sri Rama falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of month of Chaitra (March- April). Sri Rama took birth at his own will to destroy the wicked, to protect his devotees and to establish righteousness. He was possessed of all virtues. His nature was pure consciousness and bliss. He was well accomplished, handsome and endowed with royal marks. His glory and prowess were unlimited. Though he was a very fierce warrior on the battle field, his nature was Love. He was sweet spoken, gentle and kind. Sri Rama was the ideal son, the ideal brother, the ideal husband and the ideal friend. The Rama Nawami is celebrated every year as it is an opportune period to saturate ourselves with the spirit of Sri Rama. We remember and adore the ideals of Sri Rama for the very purpose of adopting these ideals in our life. There would be no point in the remembrance of the day nor in the recital of verses of the Holy Ramayana if we do not live like Lord Rama or follow his example of a virtuous life. Women too should follow the ideals of Sri Rama by becoming the ideal daughter, the ideal sister, the ideal wife and the ideal friend and by following the path of Sathya, Dharma, Shanti and Prema. Sri Rama was endowed with boundless amount of Love for his devotees. When he was walking in the forest with Sita, his consort and his brother, Laskman to reach the place where they were to elect domicile, his devotees very quickly learn about his forthcoming arrival. One of his greatest devotees was an old woman who lived in the forest. She was thrilled to learn that her Rama had come to live in the forest and would soon, on his way, reach her humble home. In preparation for his arrival, she went to pick berries from the forest to offer to Sri Rama as prasad. After she had collected a few handfuls, she proceeded to taste the berries, one by one, biting them with her teeth. When Sri Rama eventually arrived with Sita and Laskman, the old woman joyfully went to Sri Rama and piously offered the berries to him. Sri Rama smiled and took one berry and was about to put it in his mouth, when Laskman cried out, pointing to tooth marks in the berries: "Bhaya! Stop! Don't eat that! Throw it away! Can't you see that the old woman has bitten into the berries with her dirty, bad and decayed teeth?" Full of Love, Sri Rama replied: "Laskman, she has bitten into the berries to taste them, keeping only the sweet ones for me. She was prompted by her immense love for me. Only when you are full of love, you can recognise the love which is deep-rooted in the heart of another person. Let us all eat the prasad she is offering to us! The prasad is Pure Love!"
