Guest guest
EFFERTS ETERNALLY BLESSED “To be born to a virtuous mother is a great fortune bestowed by God.” – Shri Sai Samartha Satcharita, Ch. 3, Ove 70. To the man who believes, every blow is a blessing, every handicap a help. George W. Campbell was born blind. When he was six years of age, his mother taught him a lesson which we all would do well to learn. Taking his little hands in hers, she counted the fingers and said, “My child, you have five fingers in each hand. People normally have five senses. Your thumb stands for the sense of hearing: you can hear me talk to you. Your index finger stands for the sense of touch, the tactile sense: you can feel my touch on your hands. Your next little finger stands for the sense of taste: you can discriminate between the different tastes of food you eat. Your fourth finger is for the sense of smell: you can smell the perfume of my handkerchief. Your last little finger stands for the sense of sight. You are unable to see. That should not stand in the way of your going forward.” Then she took that little finger and, with a bandage, tied it to the palm of his hand. “George,” she said to him, “you have only four fingers: the fifth one is tied down. Put out your hands. I shall throw a ball to you. Here it comes: catch it!” George caught the ball, and the mother said to him, “You could catch the ball even though you are missing one finger. You can catch hold of life and live in a wonderful way even though you cannot see.” In spite of his handicap, George lived a full and fruitful life.
