Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta, As many of you know Sri Swamiji gracefully gave permission to offer Tulabhaaram during this year Guru Purnima day in Dallas, Texas. Here is what Prof.K.V.Krishna Murthy, the Chairman & Managing Trustee of I-SERVE and Dattapeetham Vidyadikari had to say about Tulabhaaram and its significance. " Jaya Guru Datta. Some of the devotees who are involved in the process of conducting the " Sadguru Tulaa Bhaara " on the Guru Purnima day (7th July) this year have approached me to explain the significance of this ceremony. Here is a brief attempt. Wishing you all a good reading - Jaya Guru Datta. " TULA " means, " balance " : The Western balance was said to be invented by Archimedes of 3rd Century B.C. But three thousand years prior to that, we have the story of SRIKRISHNA TULABHAARA in our Purana's. Thousands of year's prior to that, MANU SMRITI clearly mentions the instrument of Balance, the weighing stones and governmental control over them. So ancient is our Indian culture and heritage. In the story of Sri Krishna Tulabhaara, Satyabhama tries to weigh Lord Sri Krishna with her wealth of Gold and fails miserably. It was so because Lord Sri Krishna is Jagatguru, the teacher of the whole world. KRISHNAM VANDE JAGAD GURUM say the Puranas. The word " Guru " means " heavy " also. " Guru " is the heaviest of all the contemporary beings, in the sense that he excels every body in very respect. " Bhaara " also means heavy. But this word is not capable of indicating a SADGURU, because it actually implies " SIN " . In anyone's life, the most unbearable thing is sorrow. Its cause is sin. Hence, both sorrow and sin are heavy (BHAARA). To get rid of this " Bhaara " our sages have prescribed " Tula Bhaara " as a method of " Prayas Chitta " (ceremony of repentance). In this, one has to weigh himself in a balance with Gold, Silver, Jaggery, or some such things and then he has to donate the same to the worthy. This is one of the best methods for reducing " PAAPA BHAARA " (The weight of sin) of oneself. This, again, is very difficult, and many people cannot afford this. So, the Maharshis, out of their compassion, have given a simpler method. Since there is some similarity between the words " Bhaara " and " Guru " and since Guru has an intrinsic property of reducing the " PAAPA BHAARA " of people around him, the sages said " Weigh collectively your SADGURU in a balance with Gold, Silver etc and present the Gold etc to the SADGURU himself, so that all the people involved in the process will equally get rid of their PAAPA BHAARA simultaneously " The main problem in conducting this " Praayasachitta Karma " (act of repentance) is that the Sadguru should give his consent for this. Since the Guru, who accepts this gift, has to bear the sins of the devotees involved in the process, many a Guru do not generally concede to this proposal. Lucky are those when the Sadguru accepts it. This time such luck is descending down on the devotees of USA, that too on the Guru Purnima day. The Guru Purnima is a special day on which the power of the Sadguru attains fullness (Purnatva) and is ready to bestow fullness on the devotees, if properly approached. The fortune of doing TULA BHAARA on a GURUPURNIMA DAY with gold is a rare opportunity on many counts. To be brief - i) The day is astronomically poised to yield full fledged results for the deeds (good or bad) performed on that day. ii) The Sadguru is in a natural mood of blessing His devotees that day. iii) Gold is a special metal whose presiding deities are AGNI (fire God) and Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) so it has a natural quality of purifying individuals both internally and externally and enriching their wealth. iv) Gold has also the character of attraction and hence its TULABHAARA develops friendship and fraternity in the families of the devotees involved. v) Gold is the heaviest of all the natural metals and as such it is most suitable for the process of TULABHAARA, which involves the principle of weight. However, there is one aspect in the process of TULABHAARA, which can spoil the whole ceremony, if it is not properly understood. The Tulabhaara process involves weighing the Sadguru in a balance. That means we are equating him with something finite, which is totally absurd, impossible and undeserving. This was the very point missed by Satya bhaama in the story of " Sri Krishna Tulabhaara " . We know how miserably she was punished for that. So, the devotees should never forget the crucial point; that it is because of the mercy of the Sadguru that we are able to weigh him in a balance (TULA) and that too only physically. The word TULA also means, frequating, which can never match with the Sadguru. He cannot be equated even to Brahma, Vishnu or Shiva. So, the devotees involved in this process should never miss the point that they are not even remotely intending to weigh (or equate) the Sadguru " even physically " but are only trying to utilize the physical presence and mercy of the Sadguru to wash off their Paapa Bhaaras. If the devotees do not miss this point and perform the SADGURU TULABHAARA, with whatever material possible for them, the Guru's grace will see to it that the sins of the devotees are warded off and many more things as listed above are gifted to the devotees. I congratulate the US devotees who are having the fortune of conducting Sadguru Tulaabhaara on the Guru Purnima day this year, and wish them all fullness in health, wealth, wisdom and Guru Krupa. Jaya Guru Datta to all.
