Summary of Sri Swamiji's Yugadi message 2009

Ugadi, or Yugadi – start of a new year. Time, Eternal, keeps moving. New Year

Greetings and blessings to all!

New Year's Day is celebrated on different days by different people. Andhra

Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka states celebrate this first day of the month

of Chaitra as the New Year's day, as per Brahma Purana. The tradition of doing

puja to the dhwaja in front of the house, on this day is kept alive only in the

state of Maharashtra.

As per Sastra or scripture, it is imperative that one take an oil bath today,

using sesame oil, and wear new clothes and new ornaments. One should acquire a

new fan, and a new umbrella. In olden days on this day a special yagna used to

be performed. It is important to at least offer prayers to Lord Ganesha, the

nine planets, and to the Creator Brahma. First thing in the morning, one should

eat a chutney made with tamarind juice, neem flowers, jaggery and a bit of ghee.

Those who eat this, will enjoy a year of comfort. One should worship the

Panchangam, the almanac with the five categories of information, and listen to

it being read. One should quench the thirst of travelers by setting up a booth

with drinking water. One should have the darshan of one's king and one's

sadguru.

The celebration of the nine nights of Spring season, beginning today used to be

a tradition, that is now forgotten. When worship is offered during this time to

the deities, it strengthens one's faith in God.

Shukra (Venus) is king this year. The first half of the year will be prosperous,

peaceful and comfortable. The second half, not so good. Chant the Datta Raksha

Mantra " Om Aim Hreem Shreem Siva Raama Anaghaa Dattaaya Namaha " to attain the

strength to endure difficulties.

May Lord Datta remove hatred from the hearts of men, and promote peace in the

world. Happy New Year!
