In Chapter VI of the SriMad Devi Bhagavatam, it is stated in parts 40

to 54 the story of one Guna Nidhi who was a most disgusting criminal

who finally died. When Lord Yama's attendants came for him, Lord

Shiva's attendants also arrived at the same time. Yama's attendants

enquired why Shiva's attendants wanted to take Guna Nidhi to Shivaloka.

The reply was that because there being rudraksha 10 feet below where he

died, he is prevented from going to hell. Thus is the story of a

terrible criminal who never in his life wore rudraksha but went to

Shivaloka just because the holy beads were near him at the time of

death.
