Guest guest
Sairam, I pray for BABA's grace and blessings on all of us. May our actions be guided by HIM. Satcharita - the sacred book which has jewels in the form of BABA's words to us and future generations. It is meant for us to learn from it and practice it. Sometimes sayings of BABA are so mind bogling and baffling that we are confused and lost. When BABA said - no formality was required to worship him, just repitition of His name alone was enough to enable us to cross the ocean of worldly existence then why does Baba prescribe certain things to people to follow. What does this mean to us. We are ignorant in matters of spiritual evolution and constantly seek to be guided. When no body is available to guide us (physically) then it is the divine Hand which sheds light on our learning and guides us through series of events which unfold gently in front of our minds eye and on deeper analysis we realise it is BABA who is guiding us in such instances. I always wondered why should we take owes for god in fulfilling our wants and needs. Am I falling in to the pit of superstition created by my mind? Well it did not seem so, I was always intrigued by chapter 36 of Satcharita describing the tale of two Goa gentlemen. Why were they asked to follow certain things in order to gain lost property? What does this signify? Does it mean we have to give up something to gain something else? Baba's inspirtation has planted this explanation to my confused mind which I like to share it with you. Mind you this is my personal experience and it may relate differently to different people. The reason why BABA prescribed giving up favourite thing in order to get back his lost property or asking Shama to go to Vani to fulfill his dead mothers owe to Saptashrigi Devi, these are a means for disciplining the mind. Mind is vagarant, and in spiritual quest one has to control mind in order to progress spiritually. How can this control be attained? No doubt God's grace is must, so also human effort plays and important role in controlling this mind. When there is effort Gods grace falls on such person and success is ensured. By prescribing the methods to the seekers of solution for their problems Baba was helping them to control their senses. Disciplining the mind and control of 5 senses is essential in spiritual quest. This is what is emphasised in Satcharita. If spiritual evolution was easy then we would all be levitating in air and world would be filled with water, flowers, and good people without any trace of violence because basically we all posses certain good qualities and have love towards god (most of us do anyway). But that is not so, we have to train our body to accept moderation, and control the fleeing desires and wants. How can this be achieved? By Oberserving certain rules and controlling the parts of body. Hence people obeserve fasts - giving up a meal but substituting it with fruits (after all BABA talks about moderation in diet), it is more to control body's craving for food (specific) by which their spiritual quest would be hastened and thus please god, who in turn helps us in our spiritual quest. So next time before we ask God for something let us see if we have enough control on our mind and restrict our wants. Let us pose a simple question for ourselves - give us something that we love most, not permanently though let us say for a day in a week that is the best way to control our senses (taste). We can thus gradually progress in this path. Here is the message of the week which was the main cause for this thought and inspiration... " Another story, while wandering by the sea-side I came to a huge mansion and sat on its verandah. The owner gave me a good reception and fed me sumptuously. He showed me a neat and clean place near a cupboard for sleeping. I slept there. While I was sound asleep, the man removed a stone slab and broke the wall entered in and scissored off all the money from my pocket. When I woke up, I found that Rs.30,000/- were stolen. I was greatly distressed and sat weeping and moaning. The money was in currency notes and I thought that the Brahmin had stolen it. I lost all interest in food and drink and sat for a fortnight on the verandah, bemoaning my loss. After the fortnight was over, a passing fakir saw me crying, and made enquiries regarding the cause of my sorrow. I told him everything. He said, "If you act according to my bidding, you will recover your money; go to a fakir, I shall give his whereabouts, surrender yourself to him, he will get back your money; in the meanwhile give up your favourite food till you recover your money." I followed the fakir's advice and got my money. Then I left the Wada and went to the sea-shore. There was a steamer, but I could not get into it as it was crowded. There a good-natured peon interceded for me and I got in luckily. That brought me to another shore, where I caught a train and came to the Masjidmayi.
