Mahalakshmyashtakam - The octet on goddess of wealth

 

Mahalakshmi , who is the consort of Vishnu is worshipped as goddess

of wealth by the Hindus. In the beginning of creation she took form

from the left side of Vishnu and was later born again from the sea of

milk, when the devas churned it for getting nectar.She resides on the

chest of Maha Vishnu as " Sri Vatsa " .It was she who took birth as

Seetha and Rukmani.This very simple prayer is very ancient and has

been chanted by generations for solving all their problems.

Namstestu mahamaye shripithe surapujite

Sankhachakra gada haste mahalakshmi namostu te ..1

 

Namaste garudarudhe dolasura bhayankari

Sarva papahare devi mahalakshmi namostu te ..2

 

Sarvajne sarvavarade sarvadushtabhayankari

Sarvadukha hare devi mahalakshmi namostu te ..3

 

Sidhi budhi prade devi bhukti mukti pradayini

Mantramurte sada devi mahalakshmi namostu te ..4

 

Adyantarahite devi adishakti maheswari

Yogagye yogasambhute mahalakshmi namostu te ..5

 

Stula Sukshma maharoudre mahashakti mahodare

Maha papahare devi mahalakshmi namostu te ..6

 

Padmasana sthite devi parabhrahma swarupini

Paramesi janmata rmahalakshmi namostu te ..7

 

Swetambara dhare devi nanalamkara bhushite

Janthsthite janmata rmahalakshmi ramostu te ..8

 

Mahalakshmyashtakam stotram yah pathetbaktimannarah

Sarvasidhi mavapnoti rajyam prapnoti sarvada ..9

 

Ekakale pathennityam mahapapa vinashanam

Dwikalam yah pathennityam dhanadhanya samanvitah ..10

 

Trikalam yah pathennityam mahasatru vinashanam

mahalakshmibhavennityam prasanna varada subha ..11

 

Meaning :

O Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who is Mah & #257;m & #257;y & #257; (primordial cause

of this illusionary

world), Who bestows the worldly luxuries, Who is honored by the demi-

gods, and Who holds a conch-shell, a mace and a discus (cakra) in

hand! Salutations to You. O Goddess Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who is seated on

Garud & #803;a, Who is frightening for the Kola tribe demons, and Who

absolves all the sins! Salutations to You.[1-2]

O Goddess Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who knows everything, Who bestows all the

boons, Who is causes tremor among the evil, and Who absolves every

grief! Salutations to You. O Goddess Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who bestows

complete

attainment (siddhi) and wisdom, Who bestows salvation and luxuries in

our life, and Who is pure like mantra (chant)! Salutations to You.[3-

4]

O Goddess Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who is without a beginning or an end, Who

is

the initial power from which the world started¹, Who is the Great

Goddess, Who is born out of yoga or meditation, and Who is brought

together by the means of yoga! Salutations to You. O Goddess

Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who is pervading huge or small things as

Mah & #257;rudr & #257;, Who

is abode of strength and Who has a giant belly (storing the

universe), and Who absolves the greatest of sins! Salutations to You.

[5-6]

O Goddess Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who is situated on a lotus-seat, Whose

true

form is that of the Supreme Spirit (Brahman), Who is the supreme

Goddess, and Who is the mother of the world! Salutations to You. O

Goddess Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who has a white apparel, Who is decorated

with

beautiful ornaments, Who is the state of the universe, and Who is the

mother of the world! Salutations to You.[7-8]

That devotion-possessing man who studies this this Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;

eulogy,

he obtains all the attainments and a kingdom for all times.[9]

By reading this Eulogy once a day, one destroys the biggest sins. By

reading this Eulogy twice a day, one achieves wealth as well. By

reading this Eulogy thrice a day, one wins over the biggest of

enemies. Also, Mah & #257;laks & #803;m & #299;, Who bestows boons, Who is auspicious,

becomes eternally happy [with the person].[10-11]

 

Benefits of Chanting this Sloka:

The one who chants the above sloka with devotion will get all desires

fulfilled and will inherit great land.

 

Chanting this sloka once daily destros all sins.

Chanting this sloka twice daily will bring the devotee wealth and

grains.

Chanting this sloka three times a day will help destroy powerful

enemies.

 

It will always enable to obtain the direct, auspicious grace of Maha

Lakshmi.
