Guest guest
SAI RAM Dear Brothers and Sisters, Let us continue to understand the implications of a few more scripural terms of Atma. Sanatanam=eternal. We generally understand that as eternal, which is present in all the three periods of time:past, present and future. By this we give existence and reality to time as a separate entity from the Truth and imagine that both are eternal. Time is a concept of the human intellect, superimposed on the Atma. The Atma is not eternal in time, but is beyond time, therefore eternal. Advaitam=non-dual. Various dualities are experienced in our lifes and in the world. We experience the duality of the knower and the known, the cause and the effect, the creator and the created etc. etc. Even in the cause there are the material and efficient causes. There is difference between two objects, two beings and between an object and a being. In spite of these dualities perceived by us, the Atma remains non-dual. Some feel that in ignorance there exists duality and in knowledge this duality ends. Bagavan Ramana Maharishi says that it is not right to say that when one is enquring, there is duality and when one has realised, there is non-duality. The Truth is always non-dual despite our experience of duality. its non-dual nature does not get affected by our illusory perception. Nityam= Permanent. Time is the interval between events, experiences or thoughts. Awareness illumines events, experiences and thoughts. It is naturally present before and after each event to illumine it. The concept of time comes into existence only after the second event takes place. But the Awareness, the Truth, Atma precedes even the first event. It is therefore beyond time-eternal.
