`Vivekachudamani' the greatest work of Adi Shankaracharya says:

Guru is an ocean of spontaneous compassion and he is one who asks

for no reason. He is a friend to the pure who makes a whole hearted

obeisance to Him.

To that ocean of " Mercy and Compassion " we bow on this day of " Guru

Purnima " with a sense of surrender and dedication. We need to make

ourselves reach to the sublime stage of Sadguru but how we can make

ourselves worthy of Sadguru? (He is a Perfect Master), who guides us

at every step, His loving eyes bestows warmth of life and His

soothing hands protects us from the miseries of our mundane

existence. In order to qualify to be a disciple of such a Sadguru

the Bhagwat Gita asks us to adhere to certain specific rules where

in it states " Amani amatsav, anasuyoh amoghavat Jaya apatya jiha

ksehtra srajava dravina dist Udasinah samam pascyan sarveshu artham

to a atmonah " . Though it spells out a fairly descriptive list of the

qualifications of s Shishya (i.e. Disciple) taking solace at the

Lotus feet of the Sadguru, in short, it can be encapsulated in two

qualities.

The first, is an intense urge to be free, from the worldly life i.e.

to be a mumukshu. An urge to control the negative qualities like

envy, jealousy, lust, anger, ego and hatred etc. Also to have a

conviction that the world has no meaning when one is evolved with

the help of the Sadguru. The most important attribute is an intense

love for the Sadguru with mind, body and soul. The Bhakti of Meera

is a shining example of such love for her Lord Krishna. The second

is an intense drive, capacity and will to serve the Guru with

absolute faith and patience (Shraddha and Saburi) and a spirit to

imbibe Gyan (Knowledge) without an idea of testing the Guru. We also

need to be convinced that real solace is permanent only when the

body performs action in selfless service. One is reminded of

Eklavya, a character from Mahabharta epic who cutoff his thumb

without a flicker of thought as Dakshina for his Guru. A person who

has these qualities is most suited to be a Shishya according to

Bhagwat Gila. Shri Sainath through his own examples and precepts

guided all his devotees in the same manner. He explained the

contents of the Shloka from Bhagwad Gita to Nana Saheb Chandorkar

thus:

" Tadviddhi Pranipatena Pariprashnena Sevaya, Upadekshyanti Te

Gnyanam Gnyaninastattwadarshinah " (Shri Sai Satcharitra , Chapter 39)

Shri Sainath explained it as follows:

is not enough to merely prostrate before Gyanis; Sarwaswa Shranagati

(complete surrender) to the Sadguru is most important.

The questioning of a Guru should be done reverentially and with an

urge to achieve spiritual progress. It should not be done with an

improper motive or attitude to trap the Guru or to test his knowledge

Seva (service) of the Guru should be carried on with the feeling

that the body belongs to the Guru and exists merely to render

services to Him.

Many articles in this Guru Purnima issue brings out clearly the

required qualifications of the disciples.

Our endeavour is to make " Heritage of Shirdi Sai " a platform for

dialogue on improving the quality of our life through the path

prescribed by the Sadguru. This includes reading, speaking, writing

on the qualities, Principles, Philosophies and events in the life of

the Sadguru which will bring us closer to Him and guide us away

from " Maya " (worldly illusions). Let's imbibe these qualities as

this would bring about the much needed reformations.

We hope our readers will benefit immensely from reading these

articles. We look forward to your suggestions, feedbacks, articles

and contributions.

Baba Said

" When a man takes refuge at the feet of the Sadguru, he gets the

merit of bowing to the trinity, i.e., Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and

also Para-Brahma "

Baba is every where just feel him and keep on saying ‘Om Sai Ram’ to whom so

ever you meet.

OM SAI SRI SAI JAI JAI SAI!!! Let us pray at the lotus feet of Bhagwan Baba who

is the incarnation of all gods and protector of all, to show mercy on us, and

increase our devotion towards him

Jai Sai Ram

Swamy Mahadevan

Bow to Shri Sai-Peace be to all

Baba Bless you ever!!!
