SAI RAM Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This humble self does not know whether by Swamy`s sankalpa or otherwise, the posting on the above topic has more or less become, as it were, a question and answer session so far. One more mail has been received by this humble self from a member of one of the connected with Sathyasai requesting for elaboration of 'Pure and Impure Mind', 'Perturbed mind', 'Turbulent mind' and 'Restless Mind'. Let me share the understanding of this humble self on these topics to the extent he knows.

Mind is said to be of two types--the Pure and Impure, according to Panchadasi of Bagawan Sankaracharya. It is impure when it is subject to the pressures of lust, greed, desires etc. etc.or when it is under the thraldom of the sense organs and hence not free. Mind is said to be pure when it is free from the demands of sense organs, since mind controls them (Asuddham kamasamparkat Suddham kamavivarjitham)

.. It is the pure mind that has the capacity to realize the Supreme. Pure mind is one which is called, Buddhigrahyam Atindriyam-- grasped by intellect but beyond the grasp of the senses including mind or the sense-bound mind, as the Bagavad gita puts it. Ramakrishana Paramahamsa says, " Pure mind is the same as Pure Buddhi which again is identical with Atman which is ever pure " .

The impurities of mind are created by extreme inertia (Tamas) and over- activity (Rajas) which come to play in our Antahkarana. These two gunas express as agitations

(Vikshepa) in the mental region, and as veiling of Truth (Avarana) in the region of the intellect. These two poers are complimentary to each other---agitation causes veiling, and the more the veiling of the discrimination, the more is the agitations of the mind. Where the intellect can not see the logic of a thing or can not understand the meaning of a subject or can not conceive the significance of a situation ,the mind in its own ignorance gets agitated into restlessness and storms within. This is the experience of every one of us in our every day worldly life. A mind that is least agitated should necessarily have the least veiling. The clearer you perceive a problem, the less you are agitated. The mind that is least agitated is technically called in Vedanta as pure

(Suddha) and a mind that is agitated terribly is called impure(A-suddha). Contact with the Genuine Great saints etc. (Satsangham) cleans our misconceptions and brings into our discrimination, a better vision, and therefore, logically less agitations in the mind.

The impurity in a spiritual seeker is the essential imperfection in his mental and intellectual behaviour. Even at the cost of repetition it may be stated here, that this is due to the preponderance of " activity "

(Rajas) and " inactivity " (Tamas), in one`s mental life. In the philosophical language of the scriptures, these two temparaments together are called impurity(Mal). When once the Inner instruments are tarnished by this inner impurity, it manifests itself in the mind as agitation

(Vikshepa) and in the intellect, as an inability to discriminate and understand correctly (Avarana). So long as the mind is agitated, the efficiency of the intellect is interfered with.

(to be continued)

With Loving SAI RAMs,

G.Balasubramanian
