Jai Sai Ram,

Please check the email below...

I was frustrated with what I read very often in news papers about the tortures done on Dalits by the so called upper caste people and I questioned my friend, who has dedicated his life to Lord Krishna and has great knowledge about the Bhagavad Gita, about this.

Please see his answer below...I thought the answer was wonderful and so I am sharing it with all...

Sai Baba also never discriminated...He shared his food even with animals. He said that he is a slave of his devotees and not just the so called upper caste people. He even treated the leper devotee Nanavali and other who were unwell.

I feel so sick when I hear about upper caste and lower caste stupidity to discriminate...My request to you all is that if your heart agrees with this then please forward this email to everyone for awareness.

Is Dalit Torture Recommended by Lord Krishna?

It is appalling to see the atrocities the Dalits have to suffer. All the world people laugh at us for this and think that the Hindu religion is outdated. My heart pains when I read all about it...I want to help the Dalits...We are all the Children of God - As you shared in one of your emails that this is " Vasudeva Kutumbham " . No one is of higher or lower caste. Please help me resolve this issue.

It is really pitiful to see the condition of the Dalits. The division of society according to type of work they do is always there and it's very natural as well. The businessmen class, learned class, fighter class and labor class will always exist. And that simple division is delineated by Lord Krishna Himself (Chaturvarna Maya srishtam guna Karma Vibhagayao - B.Gita 4.13). But this is "Guna Karma Vibhagayo" –division based on qualities and skills learned not by seminal birth as most of the people take it today.

So, if the natural division of society is explained by Lord Krishna, has He recommended the torturing of lower caste people as well?? Verily Not!! The very Lord which enunciates that best of the Vows is to refrain from harming anybody by mind body and words (Vrantam Vihinsanam –Srimad bhagvad) and wants to see the mood of friendship, mercy (Maitra Karuna eva cha –Bhagvad Gita 12.9) and similar behavior (Samah sarveshu bhuteshu - Bhagvad Gita 12) for the living beings in His devotees, how could he ever advocate of such a heinous thing??

So where is the problem? The problem is in understanding the science of God. It lies in treacherously using His teachings in a twisted way to support ones concocted views (Mam maya Udayitam Vadati kim na durghatam - Srimad Bhagvatam). Time and again Lord Krishna has taken steps to correct the miscreants of such menial behavior arisen out of false proud (Vinashya cha Dushkritam – B.Gita 4.8). His incarnation as Lord Buddha was especially meant to teach the lesson of humanity to those who were misinterpreting the Vedas for supporting their barbarian ideas of animal slaughter (Daitya Mohinae –Srimad Bhagvatam). The impudent Indra (King of Heaven) when tried to devastate the whole community of cowherd people, Lord Krishna taught him a lesson by lifting the Govardhan Mountain and saving the Vrajavasis (Deve Varshati Yagya Vipluvstava - Srimad Bhagvatam).

Infact Lord Krishna is our eternal well wisher (Suhridam Sarvabhutanam – B.Gita 5.29), best shelter (Sharnam Shruhat- B.Gita 9) and our best guide (Sarvasya chaham hridi…matih smriti Gyanam –B.Gita 15.15). The very message of love and devotion is spread by Him (Samo Aham Sarva Bhuteshu- B.Gita 9.29, Sab Mam priya Sab Mam Upjaaye –Ramcharitmanas). He is the Lord of Universe (Lord Jagannatha) and he lovingly accepts the flowers and tulsi leaves offered with love from all (patram pushpam phalam toyam – B.Gita 9.26) irrespective of caste and creed. The very acceptance of service from the monkeys by Lord Rama and taking the partially eaten fruits from so called outcaste Shabari and accepting the fruits from the son of maidservant (Vidur) and His wife are classic examples of non discriminating behavior of the Lord.

It is rightly said by someone that a little learning is very dangerous. The so called upper caste smarta Brahmins stress too much on the Karma kanda part of the Vedas (Which is like hard skin of the Vedic tree) and get proud of their Vedic learning without giving much heed to the subtle feelings of love and devotion (Which is like ripened fruit of the Vedic tree) . What is the use of their great learning when they even forget the basics of humanity! Bhakta Prahlad states in Srimad Bhagvatam that such proud Brahmin is not able to deliver Himself , what to speak of helping His family members whereas a dog eater (Chandal , a low born) would not only deliver Himself but his family as well on account of loving devotion for supreme Lord and his people (Viprad Dviyad Guna Yutadarvuiindanabha - Srimad Bhagvatam).

This is not meant to criticize anybody but just to remind all of us that we all are people of God and without giving proper respect to our fellow men we could never raise to a higher platform. The one, who becomes learned and great, automatically develops humbleness and good virtues (Vidhya Datati Vinyam). Also the duty of learned class is higher. They need to help their fellow men reach perfection by instructing them in the higher knowledge as they are already very close to Supreme Lord (Kim punar brahaman punaya bhakta – B.Gita 9.33). Lord Krishna has personally exemplified that what should be the degree of humbleness in the behavior of great personalities. He Himself washed the feet of everyone at the Rajsutya sacrifice of King Yudhistira and acted as a mere charioteer for Arjuna.

Let's learn to give due respect to our poor brothers and sisters. The very display of our greatness lies not in rejecting the Dalits but it actually lies in accepting them. Let's try out the principle of Universal brotherhood (Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam) and our greatness and learning would be endorsed by Lord Krishna Himself (Panditah Samdarshina - B.Gita 5.18)!!

Sairam Saurabh,

Try replacing the word "DALITS" with "HUMANS". The main problem with us humans is we disect every issue and go to the root of it - micro level. Especially for the useless things. When we see people as HUMANs - marco level and not as, subcastes, castes, state, region, nationality or colour that is when there would be equality in world. We have no respect for people from our same family or community so how can one expect fairness and treatment for people from other community. There is no point for us to feel frustrated, it is waste of emotions and energy. We have to make a difference to our surroundings. If we call ourselves devotees then we are bound by our faith to see how we treat our family members, our friends and then proceed to community. We hold grudges about being better than others and be judgmental in everyday acts.

There are parents who are hurt and crying tears of blood by the indifferent treatment afflicted to them by their children for whom they have spent their youth earning and providing. There are siblings quarelling to be better than others and hurt each other because of greed. There are so called friends who do not miss an opportunity to back stab just to end up with an upper hand. There is no value for human life. Money talks and makes a man dance. Values have gone down the drain, show pomp and personal agenda take precedence in front of God. Professional favoritism makes one mock about other. Unfortunately, we call ourselves smarter when we make fun of others and ridicule them in front of others.

All these qualities of a man show that with modernisation and technological evolution we may have reached a better living standards but our moral standards are degrading day by day. We all have to take the blame for it. If we are sincere, let us take the first step and live in harmony with our family and friends, this comes up by taking them as they are living aside their negatives. Can we do this? Let us first ask ourselves what we have done to our immediate environment, have we crubbed the racial discrimination in our heart? We tend to forget that WE are the contributers to such unwanted factors in the society. We have to change ourselves first before we can expect changes in our society and treatment of our fellow beings.

These are my personal thoughts and opinion.

Humble pranams
