The Right Mood of Offering

During the reign of King Akbar, there lived a very famous poet named 'Abdul Rahim Khankhana'. He was expert in Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic and Farsi languages. Not only he fathomed the sacred books of various religions but also imbibed their good teachings in his life. He was a great minister of King Akbar but more importantly he was a very faithful devotee of Lord Krishna.

He was in habit of helping the needy and at times. Quite often he would be seen donating items to poor people. At the time of donating he would always keep his head and eyes down

.. Some greedy people would make use of his habit to take the donation twice.

One day a poet friend of Rahim questioned him about this peculiar habit. " My dear Rahim! You should be proud of this noble deed of helping the needy. What makes you bow down your head and eyes at the time of giving alms? " Great Rahim answered his query with a poetic verse:

Denadar Koi Aur Hai, Devat hai din raina

Loga Bharam mujh pe kare, takae nichae naian

" I am not donating this wealth. The actual donor is Supreme Lord Himself. But people falsely understand me to be the donor, so in shame I bow down my eyes. "

The friend of Rahim was speechless to see His humbleness and establishment in the right mood of devotion.

What is there in this world that actually belongs to us? Whatever animate and inanimate objects that are present in this world, all belongs to Supreme Lord (Ishavasyam Idam Sarvam - Isha Upnishad 1). Lord Krishna is the very origin of everything that exists (Aham Sarvasya Prabhavo -

B.Gita 10.8). Even our body is made of five elements (earth, air, water, fire and ether), which are just a part of Lord Krishna's inferior energy (Bhumirapo analo kham .. B.G 7.4). Great Kings claimed themselves to be the owners of whole earth. But the earth is still here whereas those kings themselves have left this world. How they could have owned the earth at first place??

If we could understand that we are simply offering a part of God's property back to God and His people (Tvadiyam vastu Goving Tubhyameva samarpaya), we would never get infected by disease of false proud. Our false ownership is the sole cause of bondage in this world (Ahankar Vimudatma Karta Aham Iti Manyatae B.G 3.27).

Let's take the lesson of humbleness from poet Rahim. It's the humbleness (Nirmam Nirahahankar - B.Gita12.12) which pleases the Supreme Lord, not the display of our charitable nature (Diner Adhika Daya Kara Bhgavan - C.Charitmrita). In strong gale, humble grass survives but proud trees fell down. How we want to act in this gale of 'display of charitable nature'? Like grass or tree? Choice is ours!!!

Regards

Vishvambhar

One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly. (Lord Chaitanya)
