It is thyaga, the capacity and willingness to give up, to renounce, to sacrifice. Three qualities distinguish man from other animals: sympathy, compassion and renunciation. Man is both an animal and a divine being. He has risen from animal level. He has to be vigilant that he does not slide into the animal level again. The difference between man and demon is just this. Man has or ought to have morality, self-control and compassion. The demon does not have these nor does he consider them as desirable qualifications. - Swami 5, 50, 500, 5000.
