“Who is the greatest Devotee of Bhagavan” Swami gives us story”. ================================================ Once upon a time, the Pujari (priest) of the Viswanath temple in Kasi was offering Arati to the deity. Suddenly, a big gold plate fell from above. The Pujari was surprised; he went nearly to have a closer look at it. There was an inscription on the plate, which read as follows: " It should be given to the greatest devotee of the Lord." Then the Pujari thought to himself, "Everyday, I am performing Sahasra Lingarchana and Abhishekam to the Lord. I am sanctifying my time by chanting

the sacred Mantras from the four Vedas. Can there be a greater devotee then me?" With his mind full of pride, he held the plate in his hand. Suddenly, the gold plate in his hand turned into an earthen plate. Feeling embarrassed at his discomfiture, he immediately put it down and the earthen plate turned into a plate of gold again. From that day onwards, all those who visited the temple took their turns to touch the plate to see if they deserved it. But it so happened that the plate turned into an earthen one,. Whenever somebody touched it. Many rich people also started visiting this temple to see his wonderful plate. Whoever touched it, it turned

into an earthen one. It continued for a long time. Wherever there are rich people, it is but natural that poor beggars also gather there to beg for alms from them. A big crowd started gathering in the temple everyday. One day, an ardent devotee of Lord Viswanath came to this temple. This devotee was moved on seen the pathetic condition of the poor beggars gathered there. He thought, " God loves the poor very much. That is why He has drawn so many of them to His abode. God will be so pleased only when I serve the poor. That is what I love to do. I will be happy only when I am able to alleviate the suffering of these poor people and make them happy. " His heart was full of kindness and sympathy for the poor. He did not go to touch the plate as others did. He had no desires. He had achieved dame, (sense control). When the Pujari saw this devotee, he requested him to touch the plate. But the devotee said, "Sir, I don't have any desires. Hence, I don't want to touch it." The Puajri requested him to touch the plate at least for his satisfaction. The devotee did not want to displease the Pujari and therefore he touched the plate.

No sooner did he touch it then it started shining with added brilliance. People who are witnessed to this event surrounded him and started asking, "Oh noble soul! What is the method you, of worship you follow? What is this Sadhana you perform?" Then he replied, " I have not preformed any Yoga Thapa, Yajna or Yaga. I only serve the poor. They are very dear to God." This was an eye-opener for the people who had gathered there. Neither by penance nor by pilgrimage nor by study of scriptures nor by japa can one cross the ocean of life. One can achieve it only by serving the pious. (Sanskrit Verse) Jai Sai Ram (Sharing with Sai Love) Ram.Chugani Ram ChuganiKobe, Japanrgcjp
