SAI RAM Dear Brothers and Sisters,

One more mail has been received by me from a Sai Brother who has reported about the untimely death of his sister`s husband at a young age of 38 on account of kidney failure. He says that on the advice of an astrologer, arrangements were made for Akhand Jap of Mahamrithyunjaya Mantram by a team of Purohits at the house of the patient and the Mantras were fully heard by the patient. Notwithstanding this Japa and many other remedial steps and observances such as havan(religious sacrifices),pooja - pat, mannath (vow)etc. his brother-in-law expired leaving behind his young wife 3 children. Our SAI Brother has questioned the efficacy and utility of chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantram. He feels that all the medical and other expenses incurred on saving the life of his brother-in-law could have, perhaps. otherwise been left behind for the family in distress. He has requested for my clarification about the utility of the Mantra through the forum.

 

 

We, Hindus, believe that the Mantra in question is to be chanted if one wants to be deathless. In other words, one who chants the Mantra is deemed to be deathless. But the fact remains that despite chanting the Mantra people die. The Vedantic view is that we never die because we were never born. On this premise we can say, that nobody dies, as none is born. No birth, no death. But day-to-day happenings before our eyes causes doubts about Vedantic declarations. My understanding in this regard is that the Mantra definitely helps us to know that our soul or Atma is deathless. Chanting of the Mantra does not assure or guarantee that our body is eternal. Body is bound to go back to the five elements by which it is composed of, one day or the other. This humble self believes that chanting of the Mantra when a person is lying on the death bed is not likely to produce the desired result, viz., grant relief or deliverance from death. At the most it can help in reducing the sufferings at the time of death. If at all this Mantra were to work as an antoidote against Death, then the Doctrine of Karma is to bediscounted heavily. In the daily prayers, this humble self begs for effortless death(

Anayesena Maranam) from God. Assuming one were to get such a peaceful death, as and when it happens, such a peaceful death is attributable to the Good Karmas performed by the individual in this or earlier births and not because of his prayers as above or because of chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantram. The Mantra is chanted with the hope that one does not get untimely death, provided the chanting is done in normal circumstances and not while one is lying on the death bed. It is chanted to know one`s eternity as Atma and not for deathlessness of the body. Even at the cost of repetition, this humble self would advocate that we should strive for birthlessness and not for deathlessness.

SAI RAM Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This humble self would not like to take credit for anything said by this self in this forum which is appreciated by any other member. The real source for such views is Bagawan Baba Himself. We are just His instruments. Probably, this humble self happened to recollect some extract from Swamy`s messages and might have written it , rightly or wrongly.
