SATHYA SAI BABA

Multiplicity is a characteristic of Prakriti (Nature). The Cosmos is a projection of the Divine. It is called Jagat - that in which things arise and disappear, come and go. Nothing seems permanent. But the spiritually realized person will recognize the permanent that subsumes the changing entity. Such a realization can come only when a person is pure in thought, word and deed. Purity must express itself in loving service.

CHAPTER 15

21. ‘Arjuna, the body by itself is absolutely inert. It is My power that animates it in various ways and makes it do so many extra-ordinary things. Have you ever thought about that? Never! And do you know why? It is your ego that deludes you!’

22. ‘This delusion, also called Maya, misleads and fools. You paint a picture and people praise it. You immediately begin to think that you, the body, have actually done it. No! It is I who put the idea for the picture, it is I who guided your hand, it is I who allowed you to make that picture beautiful. And yet you think that it is you, the body, which did it! Tell Me, who is responsible for this delusion, you or Me?’

23. ‘This precisely is where the Yogi scores. He identifies himself totally with Me or the Atma, and keeps on saying he uses his body and mind as instruments of the Atma.’

24. Arjuna says, ‘Yes Krishna, I remember the Yogis say Aham Brahmasmi or ‘I am God’!’

25.

Krishna

replies, ‘Yes, Arjuna they do. But you must be careful with this chant that the scriptures recommend. Much depends on the feeling with which and the spirit in which you say Aham Brahmasmi.’

26. ‘You don’t do this chant to proclaim to the world, “Listen fellows, do you know who I am? I am God!” No! Never in that spirit! That is vain boasting and God does not know what boasting is!’

27. Arjuna asks, ‘Then what for do the scriptures recommend this chant?’

28. Krishna replies, ‘Ah, with good reason! You see Arjuna, everything has a purpose. You know elders advise, “If you fly into a rage, tell yourself I am not an animal; I am man.” That is a reminder. The chant Aham Brahmasmi also is supposed to be chanted in the spirit of a reminder. It is a reminder that you are expected to exhibit virtues like Compassion, Selfless Love, Forbearance, etc. Remember, all these are Divine qualities. They all are already in man, and all he has to do is to let them out. The chant is a reminder that he had better do the releasing!’

29. ‘When you keep on chanting thus, slowly, unknown to you, the Divine feeling would envelop you completely. As you think, so you become; remind yourself constantly that you are God and God indeed you become!’

30. ‘When you feel you are God, you will no longer see any differences. If someone is happy, you would feel that happiness. If someone is in pain, you would feel that pain and rush to help.’

31. ‘Arjuna, in simple terms, going from the level of man to the level of God means giving up all this business of mine and thine, crushing ego, and wiping out all traces of worldly attachment.’

32. ‘A man of the world may be good, but he still functions within the limits of Swartham or selfishness and Swaprayojanam or self-interest. A man who has risen to the level of the Divine does not.’

33. ‘Just look at Me? Can you find even an atom of selfishness or self-interest in Me? Impossible! I am Divine because My Heart is full of nothing but Daya or Compassion, Prema or Pure and Selfless Love, and Kshama or Forbearance. These qualities are not switched off and on. They flow uninterrupted all the time. They are My very nature.’

34. ‘Arjuna, in the physical Universe, there is the seen and the unseen. For example, you can see mountains but you cannot see air. You cannot see the mind; and so on. I am the basis for everything in the physical Universe, both the aspects that are seen and those that are not.’

35. ‘But remember, these two aspects are nothing but the superstructure of something that is even more subtle and always is. That substratum is the Real Me. It is from that substratum that is the Ultimate that Space and Time are born, onto which the Universe gets projected. So, while living in the Universe and seeing all that goes on before you, you must go back all the way to the true fundamental basis. That alone would help you to become quickly united with Me.’

36. ‘If only people would take a few minutes off and observe Me carefully, they would realise that My Life is My Message, every single second of it. But people do not, and that includes you too, I am afraid, despite our very long association! And that is why I have to tell you all that minutes before a major war is about to start!’

37. ‘If man’s life becomes the same as Mine, then man would become one with Me ever so easily! Why don’t people understand that?’

38. ‘I have drifted off from what I was saying a short while ago; let Me get back to Yogis. These blessed ones know who exactly I am, and what My true nature is. They understand fully that they have been gifted with the human form in order to rise to My level. They know fully well that man alone can rise thus and not an insect, bird, or animal.’

39. ‘The

Yogis know where exactly they are supposed to go at the end of life, and they get there too! This is the privilege of all who are smart enough to burn trash in the fire of Knowledge. Why don’t you also do the same? What are you waiting for?!’

SCENE 1

Sathya comes back home and ponders deeply. His teacher and classmates want Him to go with them to the Scout Camp. For that, He must have money. But His brother has told Him to tell the Teacher that there is no money. Is there any other way of generating at least some money? He hit upon an idea. He has just been promoted to the next higher class. He no longer needs His old books. They are in very good condition. Perhaps, He could offer them on sale and get some cash. He decides to go to the house of a boy He knows, who might like to buy His books.

SATHYA: [standing outside the house of the boy] Kondalu, Kondalu!

KONDALU: [comes out] Raju, what brings You here?

SATHYA: You wanted old books, didn’t you? Look, I have brought them!

KONDALU: Old books? These appear to be new!

SATHYA: I don’t use these for My study; that’s why they are looking new.

KONDALU: What is the price?

SATHYA: I’ll give it to you at half-rate.

KONDALU: Half-rate means?

SATHYA: Ten rupees.

KONDALU: Ten rupees?

SATHYA: Yes, only ten rupees. With ten rupees, I can go the Pushpagiri Carnival and do service. That is why I am selling these books to you.

KONDALU: I cannot afford that price. I have only five rupees that my father earned with great difficulty; and that too in small coins! Raju, I cannot give You ten rupees

SATHYA: No problem; five rupees are enough, and take all these books.

KONDALU: Here are the five rupees [offers the money].

SATHYA: Kondalu, study well.

KONDALU: Raju, I can never forget Your kindness.

SATHYA: See you soon!

SCENE 2

Sathya comes back to His house with the cash, which is in the form of small change. Trouble is in store for Him. As He enters, the coins slip and scatter all over. Seshama Raju’s mother-in-law sees the money and becomes agitated.

MOTHER-IN-LAW: Oh my! So much money, so much money, money, money! Where did You get all this money from? Did You steal it from here?

SATHYA: I did not steal. I got this money by selling My old text books.

MOTHER-IN-LAW: Sold old books? To whom?

SATHYA: To Kondalu. He is very poor. If you want, I’ll call him and you can check with him.

MOTHER-IN-LAW: Oh, so you want me to ask him? You two are together playing a drama – You for him and he for You! My goodness, the mouse is the witness for the cat! Where did You get this money from? Let Your elder brother come, and we’ll settle this business once and for all.

Seshama Raju enters

SESHAMA RAJU: What’s all this noise?

MOTHER-IN-LAW: No noise, son-in-law; just that He is saying that He got the money by selling His books. I am asking whether it is true or not.

SESHAMA RAJU: Sathyam where did You get this money? I am asking you! From where did You get this money? Books are for studying and not for selling. We all are struggling so that You may study well and secure a very good job but You are selling Your books, pencils, and pens! We just don’t know when You will change for the better!

SATHYA: It’s not that way brother; what I am trying to say is……

SESHAMA RAJU: Shut up! It You utter another word, I’ll lose my temper and I don’t know what I’ll do then. Get lost!

The Mothe in law takes all the coins.

MOTHER-IN-LAW: My money, my money!

SCENE 3

Sathya’s plan has been scuttled; He now has no money and therefore cannot go to the Scout Camp. Soon, His friends would be coming to pick Him up. He must dodge them. So, when the boys come, He pretends to have a stomach ache.

SATHYA: Oh, pain, stomach pain, stomach pain, oh, oh, ……

BOY: Raju, what happened to You?

SATHYA: Stomach ache, severe stomach ache!

BOY: Oh dear! Why did You not take some medicine? Your pain would have come down.

SATHYA: No, I have not taken any medicine.

BOY: Raju, we are going to the Pushpagiri Carnival. It is time for the bus to leave. Aren’t You coming?

SATHYA: No, I am not coming.

BOY: Raju, if You do not come, we too will not go.

ANOTHER BOY: That’s right Raju, we will not go!

THIRD BOY: None of us will go!

SATHYA: You should not say that! All of you go to the Carnival, and I’ll come somehow or the other.

BOY: You’ll definitely come, won’t You?

SATHYA: I’ll come. I never break My promise. I always sustain those who have total faith and trust in Me. Now all of you go; I’ll find a way of coming to the Pushpagiri Carnival.

CHORUS: Really? You’ll come?

SATHYA: Definitely; I’ll come.

BOY: OK Raju, we will go; come on, let’s go.

YOUTH CONFERENCE VALEDICTORY MESSAGE

Sai Ram. This Sunday, we bring you the important points made by Swami during His Divine Discourse, delivered during the valedictory function of the World Youth Conference on Saturday, 28 th July 2007 . The highlights are presented as bullet points. The full text of the Discourse would of course appear later in the

SanathanaSarathi.

There is no place where there is no Truth. Truth exists everywhere. Truth is the origin of Creation.

A true aspirant is one who knows the correct path. Man today is unable to be a true seeker, having missed the correct path, which is the result of his strong attachment to the material world.

[swami materialises a Golden Lingam, shows it to the audience and then continues]: This is the pure and unsullied Truth and this Truth is only with this Sathya!

All beings in the Universe – birds, insects, animals and man too – have emerged from Truth.

There is nothing in this Universe that does not have Truth as its basis, and all that happens, flows, in one way or the other, from Truth.

That Truth is the possession of only ONE, THIS ONE, THIS SATHYA!

Can anyone materialise such a representation of the principle of Truth?

Truth is everywhere. When you truly follow Truth and have firm faith in Truth, you also can get access to Truth! Therefore, hold firmly onto Truth!

Swami is called Sathya Sai. Why this name? Because, Truth has this Sai as its basis!

Whosoever installs Truth in his Heart will certainly experience Divinity. Therefore, one should never

forget Truth.

Truth gets reflected in action as Dharma. Thus, the Reflection, Reaction and Resound of Sathya is Dharma. In fact, there is no Dharma greater than Truth!

These days, people specialise in many areas and try to acquire many forms of worldly knowledge. However, all this does not make them truly educated. Mere secular education alone does not constitute true education.

True education is that which emerges from Truth, whose source is God, the resident of the Heart.

What is the form of Truth? It has no form, but manifests as Dharma, Shanti,

Prema

and Ahimsa. All of these also are formless, but nevertheless, they play a great role in human life and destiny when brought forth from the Heart.

Sathya , Dharma,

etc., are all latent in the human Heart. Human values are incredibly powerful. In fact, the powers latent in man are immeasurable and NOT found anywhere else in Creation. However, effort is needed to make them emanate, come forth and shine as good thought, word and deed.

Man thus has the highest potentialities amongst all the entities in Creation, and he must make every effort to become aware of his enormous capabilities.

Man must realise that he is in fact Divine. Verily, the human form is the form of God. God, thus, moves about the world in human form.

But man does not realise this and regards human forms as mere human forms, from which follow many mistakes and problems.

Therefore, Swami wants to tell you: YOU ARE NOT A MERE HUMAN BEING! YOUARE GOD!

Think you are God and God you would become.

As you think, so you are; if you let your mind dwell on bad things, you will get only bad thoughts; and that in turn would degrade your actions.

Man is the embodiment of Divine Love. However, due to restricted thinking and lack of discrimination, this love can get polluted and highly degraded, resulting in bad actions and associated problems.

Most problems are the result of trying to excessively differentiate between beings and create a restricted as well as a separate identify for oneself, instead of seeing the Divine and Cosmic oneness of all human beings.

In fact, you all are God; however, restricted thought, word and actions can place limitations on your outlook and weaken you. That problem is caused by attachment. Attachment and desires cut you off from the infinite power source of Love within you.

Do not let attachment and desires weaken you. The best way to overcome the clutches of attachment is to remember that God is immanent in all and to love all as well as to serve all.

God is present in all. There is no place where God is not; He is in space, He is in water, earth, sound and light. Indeed, every aspect of Creation is Divine.

Ignorant of this Omnipresence of God in Creation that came out of the Creator Himself, man looks for God in temples built by man.

Swami does not say it is wrong to go to temples. By all means do so because the Omnipresent God is present in the idols also. At the same time, never overlook or be indifferent to the Omnipresence of God.

In particular, you must not only realise that you yourself are God, but also that God is immanent in all beings, humans included.

The body is the temple of God and latent in it is a mighty powerhouse of energy.

Use that Divine energy, after carefully applying Spiritual discrimination.

You might wonder: Can energy be Divine? Can the body be Divine? How is that possible?

That is possible because God is everywhere and immanent in everything, every cell and every atom. Forget not even for a second that not only are you are God but also that God is everywhere, in all things, all the time. Never forget your true nature and God.

Thus, you must Always Be Careful! This is Swami’s ABC!! Constantly check: Do I remember God or am I forgetting God?

In the ultimate analysis, you must realise the fact that the correct answer to the question “Who am I?” is: I AM I!

If this feeling is firmly established, then all feelings of differentiation would disappear. Feelings of difference come about due to Spiritual ignorance [Ajnana]. Constant reminder of this fact is the best way of overcoming Spiritual Ignorance.

In this vast Universe, God is everywhere. He is there in this gathering; in fact, this assembly is itself the Cosmic Form of God [VirataSwaroopa].

[Pointing to the Sai Kulwant Hall and the people gathered, Swami says]: This entire assembly is the Cosmic aspect of God. There may be many forms but in each form, God is immanent.

Swami is in each and every one of you. I am you and you are Me! Therefore, never yield to the feeling of duality, namely that you are different from God.

Based on this feeling of identity with God, strengthen your Love.

With Truth installed in your Heart, you can easily share Love with all.

Hence it is important to first taste the fruit of Love yourself and then share it with all.

Never hate anybody. Today, feelings of difference and hatred are widespread.

On the worldly plane, there is no doubt an empirical diversity. However, on the Spiritual plane this diversity collapses and there is only Oneness.

When the Divine principle is ignored, all becomes zeros. God is like 1 and man minus Divine principle is a zero.

As you know, by itself, 0 has no value. But when you put 1 before 0 you get 10 which has value. Thus, man acquires value only when he realises the Divine principle.

In worldly life, God must be your priority number one in both grief as well as joy.

Joy and happiness all emanate from the mind. The mind is the cause of dual feeling and it is the mind that is responsible for feelings such as pain as well as pleasure.

The mind is very powerful; it can spread joy as well as sorrow and create disturbances. But when the mind is tamed, there is no problem.

Divinity is the source of the power of the mind and when you recognise this, you will not allow the mind to be a monkey-mind. And that is when you would be able to enjoy Eternal Bliss.

The Pure Mind, the Atma, Pure or Universal Consciousness – all these mean the same. These words are just synonyms. That is why the scriptures say: Truth is one, though scholars refer to it by different names.

Different names are given to different forms for the sake of convenience; but that does not mean they are actually different. They are not in the ultimate sense, because they all represent different manifestations of One Truth.

This body is called Sathya. That is the name given to this body but NOT TO ME!

But Swami is not just the body. I am not the body nor am I the mind.

Bhagavan is Bhagavan! I AM I!

You should firmly believe that you are not the body or the mind but your Real Self.

Doubts about this eternal truth come because of the wavering mind. The mind tends to easily drift or waver on account of the food one eats, the way one behaves, the associations one has, etc.

That is why Swami often says: Tell Me your company and I shall tell you who you are! As is the company, so you become. Therefore, always seek good company.

Anyone and everyone can truly attain Liberation but only when one identifies oneself fully and with deep conviction with the Atma. If you do, you are sure to be liberated.

Just concentrate intensely and think: “Swami is in me. I am myself Swami.” This should not be a mere verbal exercise but an intense thought

that must be DEEPLY FELT.

With deep faith and a matching

steady

Mind, contemplate on Swami saying: “I am myself Swami, I am God, I am God.”

When you do that steadfastly, you would discover the Principle of the Self, that is Eternal and Nectarine.

The pollution that you see everywhere in the external world originates in the pollution of the mind.

Constantly chanting God’s name can bring about slowly but surely an end to all kinds of pollution. When the mind gets cleansed, the world also gets cleansed.

Today, few do that and you are thus forced to consume polluted and contaminated products. For example, water is heavily polluted these days, and often people have to drink polluted water.

Why has the body been given to man? So that you have an instrument that enables YOU TO KNOW YOUR REAL NATURE! But people forget that fact, allow the mind to develop body consciousness, and problems follow inevitably.

The body is like a water bubble. Do not follow the body, do not follow the mind but follow your Conscience. If you follow your Conscience, you would be liberated.

Do not be guided by what others tell you, but by your own Conscience.

Pure thoughts alone lead you to wisdom and hence always keep your mind pure! Purity of Mind alone leads to Wisdom.

If bad thoughts tend to creep into your mind, raise your defences by saying, “Such thoughts are not good for me!”

Do all you can to develop good thoughts – they alone should be your property.

People make such an enormous effort to acquire property but remember that Pure Love is the greatest property of them all. Love is God and therefore, always live in Love!

If you develop that feeling, all would be well with you.

Among the huge number gathered here, many have all sorts of doubts. True, all of you have good Hearts. Why then do the doubts come? Where do they come from?

God sends man into the world with a Pure Mind. However, subsequent vacillations in the mind caused by external factors finally manifest as doubts and mental pollution.

Hence it is important to protect the mind from getting polluted.

That alone is true Sadhana

that leads to a cleansing of the mind. Mere performance of Japam, rolling the rosary beads, and performing standard rituals is NOTSadhana; getting rid of the pollution in the mind is real Sadhana.

There is a lot of confusion about Meditation. What is real Meditation? True Meditation is the intense contemplation of the REALITY within. Swami will now give you a simple method of meditating most effectively.

Keep the Mind absolutelysteady

for just

eleven

seconds, and you would be liberated!

Eleven seconds may seem short but in fact, eleven seconds of intense

contemplation and meditation is enough!

With just eleven seconds of such inward looking, you can actually experience the eleven lokas

.. But people are not really able to still themselves absolutely for even such a short time.

These days, people strain themselves too much. Do not strain yourself unnecessarily or excessively.

People worry too much, waste a lot of money and also time.

Money is God; do not waste money. Likewise, do not waste time either, for time is God. Time waste is life waste.

Whenever you have spare time, even if it be just a second, think of Swami immediately and intensely! Swami would then manifest before you, and you actually would see this physical form in front of you! You will see Swami!

You can not only see Swami but also talk to Swami!

People say: “Talk to me Swami; please do this, please do that,” and so forth. Concentrate as I say, and I shall appear before you and certainly talk to you!

[CAUTION! IT IS GOD WHO WOULD DECIDE WHETHER OUR CONCENTRATION IS INTENSE ENOUGH AND NOT US! ]

So many are assembled here and all are devotees. But you must also know what true devotion is.

You might ask: “Swami, what is real devotion?” Know that first!

It all starts with intense, steadfast and unshakeable faith. Where there is faith, there is Love. Where there is Love, there is Peace; where there is Peace, there is there is Truth. And where there is Truth, there is God!

Truth is God, and to know this Principle and to achieve Peace, etc., you really do not have to strain yourself; all that is needed is eleven seconds of intense meditation and contemplation. That is enough but during those critical eleven seconds, you must keep your mind absolutely steady and focussed.

In fact, even before the eleven seconds are over, you would start experiencing the manifestation of the Divine and Bliss, Pure Bliss!

People sit for hours in meditation and all that results is not Bliss but pain in the joints! No need for all that; eleven seconds alone is enough, provided those eleven seconds are given entirely to God.

The pursuit of liberation calls for much discipline. With rigorous discipline, eleven seconds of intense meditation is enough to reach the summit.

Discipline includes among other things, strict regulation in the matter of food and eating habits. There are many subtle points regarding dietary habits.

Eat only at regular hours, and avoid meat and fish. If you are used to eating it, then stop doing so immediately!

Also, better to avoid cheese, and excess of milk. Many are used to meat and fish but those items expose you to many health risks.

Cheese also is to be avoided. Many like cheese very much! Excessive eating of cheese can actually weaken you.

The same applies to excessive consumption of milk and curds.

Diet restrictions may seem difficult but like all good things, bliss does not come without the requisite effort.

Discipline is required to have the vision of God.

Bliss is the Form of God who is eternal, unsullied and nectarine.

Where does this bliss come from? Is it available in any shop? No! It comes from within.

Remember: since you are Divine you also are the form of bliss!

When you are born, you are full of bliss but in due course, bliss diminishes, even as attachments build up and desires multiply.

Desires and attachments are like heavy luggage. You must reduce your luggage! That is why Swami often tells you: Less luggage, more comfort, make travel a pleasure!

Too much attachment and too many desires ultimately weaken a person, and increases worry!

Fast life style and worries are not good for the heart.

Why have so many desires? After all, money comes and goes. In life nothing is permanent. Everything passes, including both pleasure and pain.

The body too would go one day. Hence, it is good not to have too much attachment to the body! Everything must be within limits, so that health is not impaired.

If you want to see God and talk to God, then do as I say. Follow Swami’s instructions carefully and diligently, and the experience seeing and talking to God is guaranteed!

Do not mistake Bhakti

to mean rigorous observance of rituals. Bhakti is not mere observance of rituals. True Bhakti implies steady and steadfast love for God. Love for God should be absolutely steady and unwavering. It must be firm and constant.

There is nothing beyond Love. Body may decay but the Divine Love within is eternal and unchanging.

Cherish, safeguard and sustain this Divine Love intrinsic to you. Then you would certainly attain God.

Too much attachment would enthrone man’s mortal enemies, Kama, Krodha,

Lobha,

Moha, etc., in the Heart.

Seek security in Pure Love and always smile. Avoid being sullen and putting on a caster oil face! Love would then manifest easily.

Always be smiling! God always smiles and has no worries or problems!!

Swami is filled with joy to see such a huge gathering of Love! You can be anywhere, but if you are filled with Love, Swami is happy here!

Swami is happy merely by looking at your joyous faces.

Being here is the result of your good fortune.

Remember, there is no meditation greater than Love. And Love is the greatest medicine as well as cure for all problems.

Swami’s Love is the greatest medicine for you.

Swami wants you to be filled with happiness and peace, and live in harmony with your family.

Do not yield to any weakness such as anger or sorrow; nor should you get perturbed by any problem.

Swami blesses you all to live in happiness, joy and bliss!

" SWAMI LEAVES HIS BODY AND COMES BACK TEN MINUTES LATER

Narrated by a Dear Sai Brother :

( A Trayee experience, happened when one of our sirs Devsen was a student)

We, students, have great experiences at Prashanthi and Vrindavan. But the most memorable experiences have been at TRAYEE BRINDAVAN, the official residence of SAI BABA, where we spent the closest moments with HIM...

SAI BABA during the sessions in Trayee is most informal, asking students individually about their personal problems, their families and other things. It was during such a session that the following incident, which shocked the students beyond measure, giving them an indication of the kind of phenomenon SAI BABA is, took place.

The students had assembled in TRAYEE and Baba was on HIS way from HIS room to take HIS seat. Before that session Baba had given a discourse on the purpose of life -- the need for an individual to experience his divine SELF, only after such an experience does a person reach the end of the cycle of birth and death. As a part of the discourse Baba also asked the assembly to keep reminding themselves of they (all of them) being a part of the divine from which everything emerged and everything will one day merge into.

As soon as Baba came into the room, He looked around at everyone and stood silently for sometime. Then HE started asking each one those present there, " who are you... who are you " . Surprised at such a question, many replied " Swami, raja ... Swami Shyamkumar " etc, many others said remembering the discourse of Swami, telling all to remind themselves of they being a part of the divine, said " Swami, I am Sai Baba " .

" Swami, Any drop taken out of the ocean has the same quality as that of the ocean. Since we all have emerged form you Swami, we are all same as you. " so saying they justified their answer. Baba then said, " All right if you really are Sai Baba, then leave your body and show me. " . Taken aback at such a command from Baba, the students did not reply back. Obviously none present there could ever think of doing what SAI BABA had asked tem to do. " Come on, Come on " , He commanded them back. Finding the silence still pervading in the hall, He said " As you experience your divine self, you will have all powers given to you to perform do acts that are above the laws of nature. " ...So saying He got up all of a sudden and said " SEE I AM GOING TO LEAVE MY BODY " , a moment later He collapse into the chair, leaving everyone in the room shell-shocked.

Commotion, pandemonium, confusion... Hell seems to have broken loose. Almost all the people assembled there stood up in their places and tried to rush towards Baba’s fallen body. As this happened, one of the college teachers pushed ahead, trying to control the mayhem requested everyone to stay back and not harm Baba's body by thrusting themselves on the body. It took sometime for the crowd to be bought under control as people were being convinced to go back and sit in their places. As the crowd settled, Baba's personal doctor was called in and what he found sent shivers within everyone.

Baba's heart had stopped beating; there was absolutely no pulse beat in his arm and the breathing (after noting the air movement under His nostrils) was found to have stopped completely. Hearing this, each and everyone present there started praying to Swami to come back into His body for it was too much to expect for them to live in the world without HIS guidance and presence.

Some suggested that Bhajans be sung and slowly the chants arose which later became full throated. Five minutes later, the bhajans had become louder and the crowd was already into their 2nd song with everyone concentrating on Baba's body looking for signs of movement. If there were any, they hadn't noticed.

The third song got over and as the 4th song was being sung, those in front noticed a small movement in Baba's fingers. As word spread, the bhajan singing went into feverish pitch. Prayers became even stronger asking Baba to come back into His body soon. As the chants grew louder, the movements became even more significant and by the time the 6th song was over Baba had opened His eyes to the great joy of all those present.

Thrilled at the spectacle that they saw, the people assembled started reaching out to Baba again, only to be asked by Baba to go back and settle down in their seats. Baba asked for the bhajans to be halted as soon as the next song ended. Silence pervaded throughout the hall as none spoke, all eyes rested on Baba.

A few seconds later Baba spoke " Those in divine bliss will not be restricted by ordinary laws of nature. What you saw here was a small example of what is possible for those in the highest state; a state in which I always was, is and will always be. Remember God is not to be found outside for He is within you. Understand that, experience and enjoy for happiness really lies not in comfort, but in contentment, in UNION WITH GOD. "

This experience was long talked about, both in Prashanti and Vrindavan. It showed Baba's control over nature and more importantly leave and come back into it at His will, proving beyond doubt that He really is, as He says " MRITUNJAYA " , one who has won over death, who lives forever.

How I Met My Master

By: Priya Devi R

The dawning of that day was like any other ordinary day without any anticipation or eagerness for that least expected more than a significant day that upturned my life inside out, rather my attitude towards life. We have heard from those who tread the path of spirituality, those mellowed ones owing to their perpetual indulgence in the path; that when that eventual day shows up your Master is there to embrace you into his fold. A fold that captures you totally devouring you, ripping off your old modes of thinking, exposing you to the naked truth of what one's true essence is by smashing one's idea of erroneous conception of one self by drilling into one perpetually the veracity of the true self. A master either forces His stormy entry pushing open the portals of one's heart or gently like that of a flower blooming unaware to an earthly eye.

It so happened that a family friend on one of his casual visits to my place gave me two devotional audio tapes as I had a flair for music; one of the two's covers bore the picture of an old bearded man which had hardly made any impact on my ignorant mind. So it went right into my shelf that readily housed all the other tapes that only gratified my seeking of senses rather than the soul; to lie there idle, unheard for a long time not less than ten years.

Then came the need or rather the time for me to lend my ears to the songs that lay abandoned all this while on a casual search of the shelf. Swept away completely by the lyrics and the heart rending melody, I found my self hearkening to it , slowly losing myself in it. My first visit to His ashram was an unplanned one on my return from madras. The ashram located at the foot hills of the holy Mount Thirunannamalai

bore an aura of solemn silence , simplicity and homeliness. As I slowly went about the ashram with an exploring eye I found my self in front of a statue of my Master. The moment my mind losing itself of its vagaries, delved into some unredeemable depths; went into a hiding forgetting to bother me in a state of oblivion for a few moments. Those were moments that taught me the nature of a still mind; moments that revealed the language of silence in this words dominant world; moments that sent waves of bliss within my very being. For how could a Master who had shed His form years before my birth could have such an authentic impact on me which resulted in me hankering with insatiable craving to know about Him and his teachings of self enquiry & surrender.

The books about Him satiated my ravenous yearnings about Him and His teachings, His miracles and devotees; recordings that exposed me to the fact that the folks of His fold had relished the same treatment of moments of a stilled peaceful mind flinging me into arenas of astonishment. Was it an initiation into silence? Or a sample of the ultimate answer to one's spiritual quest? Or sheer magnanimity to expose me to His benevolence; I, who was ignorance personified and was incognizant of the greatness of spirituality. Ever since manifesting His Grace tirelessly and engulfing me with Mercy, so who is the compassionate piper who has lured His mice with the divine pipe of Grace to bask in His mercy and to collide with infinity? He is none other than the Great Master Ramana Maharshi the sage of Arunachala.

Who is Sri Sathya Sai Baba?

“I am God. And you too are God. The only difference between you and Me is that while I am aware of it, you are completely unaware.” This is the answer Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba gives to people who query Him about His identity and divinity. This fundamental truth of man’s divine nature is at the heart of His message and mission. Indeed, in His discourses to devotees, He addresses them as “Embodiments of the Divine Atma”. All who experience His pure and selfless love, and benefit from His illuminating counsel, and witness His miraculous nature get a glimpse of the glory and majesty of God, and therefore of what one potentially and inherently is.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born as Sathyanarayana Raju on November 23, 1926 in the village of Puttaparthi, in the state of Andhra Pradesh in

South India. Even as a child, His spiritual inclination and contemplative nature set Him apart from other children of His age, and He was known as ‘Guru’ and “Brahmajnani’ (knower of Brahman or Godhead) among His peers and others in the village. However, it was not until October 20, 1940, the day He made the historic declaration of His Avatarhood, (Avatar - Divinity Incarnate) that the world at large learnt of this divine phenomenon. Today, millions of devotees from all over the world, professing various faiths, and hailing from various walks of life worship Him as an ‘Avatar’, and an incarnation of the Sai Baba of Shirdi. Thousands gather every day at Prasanthi Nilayam, His ashram established beside the village of Puttaparthi, for His Darshan, when He moves among devotees blessing them and providing spiritual succour and solace.

Revealing the purpose of His Advent, Sai Baba has said that He has come to re-establish the rhythm of righteousness in the world and repair the ancient highway to God, which over the years has systematically deteriorated. In His own words, “This Sai has come in order to achieve the supreme task of uniting the entire mankind as one family through the bond of brotherhood, of affirming and illuminating the Atmic Reality (Atma – The Self) of each being, to reveal the Divine which is the basis on which the entire cosmos rests, and of instructing all to recognise the common Divine Heritage that binds man to man, so that man can rid himself of the animal and rise up to the Divine, which is the goal.”

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is an integral manifestation who combines two very significant roles. Firstly, He is a great spiritual Master, famed for His simple and sweet exposition of the greatest and most intricate of spiritual truths which form the fundamental teachings of all the religions of the world. Elucidating on His mission, Bhagawan declares “I have come not to disturb or destroy any faith, but to confirm each in his own faith, so that the Christian becomes a better Christian, the Muslim a better Muslim and the Hindu a better Hindu.” His formula for man to lead a meaningful life is the five-fold path of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanthi (Peace), Prema (Love) and Ahimsa (Non-Violence). Love for God, fear of sin and morality in society – these are His prescriptions for our ailing world.

Secondly, He is an inexhaustible reservoir of pure love. His numerous service projects, be it free hospitals, free schools and colleges, free drinking water supply or free housing projects, all stand testimony to His selfless love and compassion for the needy and less privileged. True to His declaration - “My Life is My Message”, He has inspired and continues to inspire millions of His devotees worldwide by His personal example to live the ideal that service to man is service to God. The Sri Sathya Sai Organization today has a presence in over 167 countries in the world and members undertake group service activities that benefit their immediate community.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is thus a beacon of hope in a world that is desperately seeking an end to the unrest and sorrow prevalent today. His message of “Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God” is a spiritual salve that will lead mankind from the darkness of ignorance to the light of immortality. Indeed, very rarely does such a divine power walk the earth. As one devotee said, “Bhagawan Baba is nothing but Love walking on two feet”. Mankind must use this golden opportunity to follow in His footsteps. That is the way to its redemption and its salvation.

The Concept of Avatarhood

Who is an ‘Avatar’ and why does He incarnate?

Who is an Avatar?

An ‘Avatar’ is defined as an incarnation (physical manifestation) of the Supreme Being. The word ‘Avatar’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Avataranam’ which means ‘descent’, and usually implies a deliberate descent of the Divine into the mortal realms to reveal the Absolute Truth to humanity and remind them of their true divine nature. Though Avatars may appear in different forms at different times, places and circumstances, yet they are all the manifestations of the One Supreme Lord.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the Avatar of the Age, has succinctly explained the meaning and the reason for the descent of the Avatar in the following Telugu verse:

“Avatarinchuta yanutalo Arthamemi?

Janulapai Preethi Vaatsalya Paratha thoda

Vaari Sthaayaiki Daivambu Vachchu Bhuviki

Jeeva Prajnatho baatuga Daiva prajna”

He says that Formless God takes a form and descends upon the Earth as an expression of His boundless love and affection towards humanity. The Avatar is an enigmatic, yet delightful blend of individual consciousness and the Divine Consciousness. The Avatar behaves in a human way so that mankind can feel kinship with Him, but rises to His super-human heights so that mankind can aspire to reach those heights.

In Bhagavad-Gita, Lord Sri Krishna, the Avatar of the Dwapara Age, declares thus:

" Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya Glanirbhavathi Bharatha

Abhyukthanam adharmasya Thadathmanam Srujamyaham.”

“Parithranaya Sadhunam Vinashaya cha Dhushkrutham

Dharma samsthapanarthaya Sambhavami Yuge Yuge "

Whenever there is a decline of Righteousness and rise of evil, the Lord incarnates from time to time to uphold Righteousness, to protect the Virtuous and to uproot the evil.

The Avatar appears whenever the world is passing through a spiritual and moral crisis. The Avatar comes in order to uphold Dharma (Righteousness) and raise the universal consciousness.

Why does He incarnate?

One may ask - why should the Lord Himself incarnate? Why should He not set about the task of restoring Dharma through the many minor gods and angels that He has at His command? The Mughal Emperor Akbar once posed the same question before the courtiers, for he scoffed at the Hindu idea of the Formless adopting a Form and descending into the world as an Avatar to save Dharma. Birbal (the celebrated courtier in Akbar’s court, known for his wit and wisdom) asked for a week's time to answer the question. A few days later, when he was in the pleasure boat of the emperor, sailing across the lake with his family, Birbal threw overboard a doll made to look like the emperor's little son, crying at the same time, " O, the prince has fallen into the water! " Hearing this, immediately the emperor jumped into the lake to rescue his son. Birbal then disclosed that it was only a doll and that the prince was safe. He allayed the anger of Akbar by explaining that he had to perforce enact this drama in order to demonstrate the truth of the Hindu belief that God takes human form to save Dharma without commissioning some other entity to carry out that task. Akbar could have ordered one among the many personnel he had on board to jump in and rescue his son. But his affection was so great and the urgency so acute that the emperor himself plunged into the lake to save his son from drowning. The decline in Dharma is so acute a tragedy and the intensity of affection that the Lord has for good men is so great that He Himself comes to the rescue.

The Triune Sai Avatar

The Divine mysteries cannot be fathomed by the human mind, unless God himself chooses to unlock them out of His immense love and compassion. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in a landmark discourse on 6th July, 1963, the Guru Poornima Day, declared the secret behind His advent. He revealed that the Sai Avatar is a triple incarnation of the Shiva-Shakthi Principle – Shiva as Shirdi Sai Baba, Shiva and Parvathi embodied as Sri Sathya Sai Baba and the Shakthi Principle that will incarnate as Prema Sai in the Mandya District of the state of Karnataka. Click here for the complete text of the Guru Poornima Discourse of 6th July 1963.

Even in His childhood days, Swami used to refer to ‘The Saint of Shirdi’ in the songs that He taught His companions. Very few in that region had ever seen or heard about Shirdi or Sai Baba. Little did they realize that the child in their midst, singing and dancing so captivatingly would, in a few years, make their village another Shirdi to which hundreds and thousands would come seeking the same Baba!

Sai Baba of Shirdi was born in a remote village called Pathri in Maharashtra on September 28, 1835 to the couple, Gangabhavadiya and Devagiriamma. Gangabhavadiya, overcome with a feeling of intense renunciation immediately after the child’s birth, decided to retire into a forest. With Devagiriamma religiously following her husband, the newborn was left in nature’s care. A pious Muslim and his wife took care of the abandoned child till He was four years of age. Then they handed Him over to a spiritual master by name Gopalrao Deshmukh (also known as Venkusa). For 12 years, till 1851, Baba stayed in Sri Venkusa's ashram. One night in 1851, for the first time, Baba came to Shirdi. However, He left after a two month stay. He returned to Shirdi again in 1858 and stayed there for 60 long years. Just prior to His shedding the mortal coil in 1918, Shirdi Baba told some of His devotees that He would reappear in the Madras Presidency in 8 years time. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, born in 1926, declared that He was Shirdi Baba come again.

Sathya Sai Baba invariably refers to Shirdi Baba as 'my previous body' whenever He speaks about Him. He often describes to His devotees, how He in His previous body dealt with people and situations, what illustrations He gave to clarify certain points, what questions were asked, etc. Many devotees of Shirdi Baba have had experiences confirming the unity of the two Sais. Dr. Hislop and Swami on Teachings of Buddha.

............................................................................

The Teachings of Buddha

Hislop: What were the mistakes, if any, in the teachings of the Buddha?

SAI: One mistake he made was to allow women to come close to him in the Sangha. It was a woman who gave him the meat, the poisoned meat which killed him.

H: It was his custom to accept whatever was given into the begging bowl, even if it was meat.

SAI: That was a second mistake. Here he failed to put his teaching into practice - his teaching was Ahimsa - total non-violence to all creatures.

H: The Buddha taught that Nibbana (Nirvana) was the ultimate goal. Is that different from the liberation of which Swami speaks?

SAI: It is the same. Nirvana, Liberation, Realization are just different words.

Contentment and the Need for Spirituality

(Note: On the road to Anantapur, we came upon a woman beggar who was blind. Baba gave her money and she responded with “Sai Ram, Swami " . It had been two years since He had been to Anantapur, but without Baba even speaking, she recognized Him.)

H: The woman seems to be happy.

SAI: She was born blind but is always happy. She has no worries.

H: How could that be? Look at her life. It must be a life of misery.

SAI: Why? She has no desires and is content. She does not know the life of the person who has eyes. She does not think that others are different from her. Her family is worried about her condition, but she has no worries.

H: How could she not want a life different from that of a beggar?

SAI: Desires arise from the tendency of the mind to compare. It is chiefly the eyes, the vision, which presents to the mind opportunities for comparison. She is blind, her mind is not busy with comparison, so desires do not arise.

H: If she continues happy and content, will she be finished with life and death and be free at the time she dies?

SAI: No. That requires spirituality.

Vipassana Meditation

H: It is very important to know what Swami said, that the ground from which desires arise is the mind making comparisons. Before I had the good fortune to meet Swamiji, my wife and I went to Burma

every year for the practice of Vipassana meditation. It starts with Anapana.

SAI: I know, the watchman at the point where nose and lip meet.

H: After the mind got concentrated enough to sit there, the Meditation Master directed the concentration to the top of the head.

SAI: Then there was a sensation like ants crawling on the scalp.

H: Yes, Swami. Wherever I placed my attention, there was intense burning. That fire is said to be the direct perception of the arising and immediate disintegration of the smallest particles of matter which comprise the body. The conscious perception of the fire burns up all impurities. Was the Meditation Master correct in what he said?

Shri Sai Sat Charitra - Chapter 14 - Part II

By:

Swarna.Venkateswara Swamy

Ruttonji always brooded on this matter and said in his mind, " Would God be ever pleased to grant me a son? " He thus looked morose, had no relish for his food. Day and night, he was enveloped with anxiety whether he would ever be blessed with a son. He had a great regard for Dasganu Maharaj. He saw him and opened his heart before him. Dasganu advised him to go to Shirdi, take Baba's darshan, fall at His Feet and seek His blessing and pray for an issue.

Ruttonji liked the idea, and decided to go to Shirdi. After some days he went to Shirdi, took Baba's darshan and fell at His Feet. Then opening a basket, he took out a beautiful garland of flowers and placed it around Baba's neck and offered Him a basket of fruits. With great respect he then sat near Baba, and prayed to Him saying- " Many persons who find themselves in difficult situations come to You, and You relieve them immediately. Hearing this, I have sought anxiously Your Feet; please, therefore, do not disappoint me. "

Sai Baba then asked him for Dakshina of Rs. five which Ruttonji intended to give, but added, that He has already received Rs. 3-14-0 from him, and that he should pay the balance only. Hearing this, Ruttonji was rather puzzled. He could not make out what Baba meant. That was the first time, he thought, that he went to Shirdi and how was it that Baba said that He had formerly got Rs. 3-14-0 from him?

Baba was moved and told him not to be worried, and that his bad days had ended.

Ruttonji could not solve the riddle. But he sat at Baba's Feet and gave the balance of the Dakshina asked for, explained to Baba fully, as to why he came and sought His help, and prayed that Baba should bless him with a son. Baba was moved and told him not to be worried, and that his bad days had ended. He then gave him Udi, placed His hand on his head and blessed him saying that Allah (God) would satisfy his heart's desire.

Sai Ram. When the time is ripe, and one's karma is about to be resolved, one meets great Saints or their devotees and get good advice, which they follow. In this case too, Sri Ruttonji's time has come and thus he was inspired to take the advice of Sri Dasganu Maharaj, who was a great devotee of Sai. Hence he could follow the advice and visit Shirdi.

The decimal system was still not introduced at that time and a Rupee was subdivided into 16 annas and each anna was further divided into 4 kanis. So, Baba told him to give the balance, viz. 1 - 2 - 0 since He had already received Rs. 3 - 14 - 0 from Sri Ruttonji. Let us see how He received that amount before that devotee ever came to Shirdi. This story is wonderful and gives us beautiful spiritual gems as we shall shortly see. Sai Ram.

Shri Sai Sat Charitra - Chapter 14 - Part II ...Contd

Then after taking Baba's leave, Ruttonji returned to Nanded and told Dasganu everything that took place at Shirdi, He said that everything went on well there, that he got Baba's darshan and blessing with Prasad, but there was one thing which he could not understand. Baba said to him that he had got Rs.3-14-0 before. " Please explain as to what Baba meant by this remark, " he said to Dasganu, " I never went to Shirdi before, and how cold I give Him the sum to which Baba referred? "

Dasganu was also puzzled and he pondered much over it for a long time. Some time afterwards it struck him that Ruttonji had received some days ago a Mahomedan Saint, by name Moulisaheb, in his house and had spent some money for his reception.

Moulisaheb was a coolie-saint well-known to the people of Nanded. When Ruttonji decided to go the Shirdi, this Moulisaheb accidentally came to Ruttonji's house. Ruttonji knew him and loved him. So he gave a small party in his honour. Dasganu got from Ruttonji the yadi or memo of expenses of this reception, and everybody was wonder-struck to see, that the expenses amounted to exactly Rs.3-14-0, nothing more, nothing less.

Everybody came to know, that Baba was omniscient, that though He lived in Shirdi, He knew what happened outside far away from Shirdi. In fact He knew the past, present and future, and could identify Himself heart and soul with anybody. In this particular instance how could He know the reception given to Moulisaheb, and the amount spent therefore, unless He could identify Himself with him, and be One with him?

He lived in Shirdi, but knew what happened outside far away from Shirdi.

Ruttonji was satisfied with this explanation and his faith in Baba was confirmed and increased. In due time afterwards, he was blessed with a son and his joy knew no bounds. It is said that he had in all a dozen (12) issues out of which only four survived.

In a foot-note towards the end of this Chapter, it is stated that Baba told Rao Bahadur Hari Vinayak Sathe, after the death of his first wife, to remarry and that he would get a son. R.B. Sathe married second time. The first two issues by this wife were daughters and he, therefore, felt very despondent. But the third issue was a son. Baba's word did turn out true and he was satisfied.

Sai Ram. See what spiritual gems the story yielded? Time and again, Baba showed that He was one with all Gods and Saints and thus was actually beyond all forms and shapes. Just as white light has all the colors, and just as a white screen has no specific images but shows faithfully what ever is projected on it, Sai was totally egoless and thus showed oneness with which ever Diety or Guru was the Ishta (liked) of the devotee. Thus He was beyond all religion, caste, country and time. Sai Ram.

• Watch the interview with Mata Amritanandamayi

A large New York crowd waits patiently for hours hoping to spend a few moments with a very special woman who's traveled thousands of miles from her native India, delivering a powerful message of enduring faith and hope.

These devotees are united in the belief that Mata Amritanandamayi is a saintly wonder. She draws millions of people around the world for spiritual relief that people say comes from her gentle touch. Affectionately called " Amachi " or " Amma, " meaning mother, she reaches out to one and all with a simplest of gestures — a meaningful embrace. Her welcome is warm, her smile is sparkling and her white sari glows and offers up a hug, as if each person in her arms were the only person in the room. Amachi is known as the " hugging saint " by those who have experienced what they call the magic of her unconditional love for humanity.

It's estimated that on this summer day, at least 6,000 people have gathered to receive hugs as a " darshan, " the Sanskrit word meaning a session or audience in the presence of a saint. It is indeed fascinating to watch the hundreds of people — Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus — kneel as they get closer to Amachi and her magnetic hugs. She embraces all faiths and describes herself as a servant of god.

(Story continues below)

Her outreach has a profound effect on those who receive her hugs. They come to heal and open up their hearts to a woman who has dedicated her life to spreading infinite compassion and motherly love throughout the world.

I asked many people to describe their feelings after receiving Amachi's hugs. Many people told me they were filled with peace and felt what they described as divine love. I saw a number of people wiping away tears of joy after their encounter with Amachi. This humble woman who speaks no English is teaching a universal lesson that transcends the spoken word — that the need for love is the common thread shared by all and is fundamental for the human spirit to thrive.

Her compassion knows no bounds. Born in a poor fishing village, Amachi was treated harshly as a child by her family for being different. When she was young, she was indeed unique. At six months she could walk and talk, and by the age of three she was constantly singing spiritual hymns and praising God. When she turned nine-years-old, she began to question the suffering she witnessed among the very poor and elderly. She immediately embarked on missions of kindness, often sharing her food with those who had none. She spent time with the homeless and offered up all of her worldly possessions so that she could give comfort and encouragement to those less fortunate. Soon, word spread that this woman had an unusual effect on people who felt uplifted by her presence. By the age of 21, she refused marriage and began her public philanthropic ministries.

Though she doesn't proclaim that she is a magnate for miracles, I spoke with a number of people at this gathering who didn't hesitate to say that they have seen and know people who had suffered from severe illnesses or disease and miraculously were healed after a hug from Amachi. Many people in this country and millions in India believe that Amachi can manifest miracles through the power of her healing touch. As a result, I met individuals with conditions, like paralysis, who had traveled hundreds of miles, just to receive her blessings with the hope that they too would be healed. That kind of faith is so inspiring.

In India she is known as the " Saint of Compassion " and amazingly often sits for 16 hours or more embracing people without interruption or pause for food and water. Similar scenes are being played out here in this country as she continues her

U.S.

hugging tour.

Her philanthropic efforts have raised millions for the poor. In India, she's established a number of orphanages, clinics, schools and an 800-bed hospital.

When Hurricane Katrina hit she raised more than a million dollars for the people of

New Orleans and Mississippi. Her efforts are being recognized by the world stage. She's served as the President of the Parliament of World Religions, and she's addressed the U.N. several times calling on the world body to end poverty and disease.

When it came time for my interview, we talked via a translator and she expressed her deep concern for those less fortunate and troubled souls. As we chatted, she never missed a beat and continued hugging people in the long line. In our conversation, she told me that she believes compassion to the poor is our duty to God.

She also adds that when she offers a hug it represents the connection between the mother and child — the " umbilical cord of love. " She says it's the essential bond that cannot be broken.

With that, Amachi hugged me and gave me her blessings in her own native Indian language. Her warm embrace was very special and as she looked at me with joy, I could feel what others have felt and reflected upon, that in this age of cynicism and doubt, there is one woman who continues to set an inspiring example offering this simple but potent message: with unconditional love anything's possible.

" The Cave of Vasishta "

(Guru of Rama)

Supernatural Acts Of God-Sai Baba

The twenty-sixth of July, 1957, was full of pleasant memories for the devotees and the residents of Sivanand ashram, for Baba boarded a bus and proceeded along the bank of the Ganges to a palace of the Rani of Garhwal for a quiet morning.

On the way back Baba stopped the bus at a place where a thin little iron post carried a half-distinct nameplate reading " The Cave of Vasishta " (Guru of Rama). He descended the rather precipitous incline to the river bank as if he had been there often before, and as if he were aware of a prearranged engagement with the occupant of the cave. The Ganges

curves widely near the cave, and so the scenery was doubly attractive. The cave bears a hallowed name; it has been sanctified by the austerities performed therein by many great recluses and monks in the past. Swami Purushotamananda, a disciple of Swami Brahamananda of the Ramakrishna order, had been initiated into monastic life by Mahapurushji, another direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. The Swami had been in the cave for thirty years. he welcomed Baba as if expecting him. He was more than seventy years old and had spent the major part of his life in asceticism of a most rigorous kind and in the study of the scriptures. His face had the genuine glow of spiritual joy and the slightest mention of the glory of the Godhead sent him into samadhi, the depths of inner bliss. When a young man of twenty-seven, Brahamanandaji had read his palm at Kanyakumari and predicted that he would go into a cave for continuous meditation.

Baba repeated the visit the next evening in spite of a thunderous sky and the grumbling of those who accompanied him, but both ceased by his grace. Baba sang a number of songs while at the cave. Hearing that the Swami had been suffering from chronic stomach-ache for many years, Baba " took " some candy from nowhere and gave it to him with instructions about diet.

More mysterious and significant was the Vision that he gave to Swami Purushotamananda that evening. As early as 1918, the Swami had written to his Master, " All is false and I cannot rest satisfied until and unless I come face to face with Truth! " After sending everyone outside the cave, Baba and the sage went into the inner room. Sri Subbaramiah, President of the Divine Life Society at Venkatagiri, describes what he was able to see from outside the cave: " Even now that picture is imprinted in my memory. I was standing near the entrance to the cave. I could see what was happening through a chink in the door. Baba placed his head on the lap of Swami Purushotamananda and lay himself down. Suddenly his entire body was bathed in divine brilliance. His head and face appeared to me to have increased very much in size. Rays of splendor emanated from his face. I was overwhelmed with a strange inexplicable joy. " When later asked to divulge the nature of the vision, Baba informed us that it was a vision of the darshan of Padmanabha as installed, since childhood, in his heart. " It was Jyothirpadmanabha " . He said Jyothi meaning Light.

After a minute or two, Baba rose and sitting by the side of the septuagenarian, called him by name and slowly brought him into the consciousness of space and time. Baba sang a song on Rama, composed by Thyagaraja and when he concluded, he waved his hand and materialised from the air a rosary of sparkling sphatika beads for Purushotamananda.

Five years later when the Swami left his body behind and merged in that Truth, Baba announced his departure to me at Puttaparthi (thousands of miles away). It was a few minutes after the emergence of the Lingam from Baba's stomach where it grew for days. It was Mahashivarathri; Baba told me that Swami's body will be buried with the Sphatika Rosary on the chest. (It was!)

The incidents at Vasishtha cave were literally mind-blowing. When we were allowed in, we hung on every word that Baba uttered and gathered every signal of adoration that emanated from the aged monk - the rising eye-brow, the twinkling eye, the smothered gasp, the folded palm, the smile that shone atop the beard. Baba told him of his early trials at the cave, of his struggles to light a fire and of his amazement, one morning, to find a package of match boxes hiding in a corner. Baba confirmed " I placed it there for you " . The monk sat up at this surprising revelation. The attendant monks explained that for many years they were using fire-stones to get the spark which they would nourish, feed and foster into flame. They too were aghast at the discovery, that Baba was aware of their Guru, of his travails and his needs. " He knows all: He is all " they exclaimed. Man has no means to identify what cannot be accounted for, explained or measured. He can only sit silent, dumbfounded in deep dismay.

Sri Adi Sankara Bhagavadpada - Part II

By: Priya Devi .R

Miracles are a part of saints' life. According to Ramana Maharshi, a true saint or a Jnani does not take credit to the miracles that are performed on account of one's powers. He said miracles are natural happenings wrought by the very presence of a saint who is free from the illusion of one is the body or the mind.

The life of Adi Sankara was laden with numerous miracles. Once in Kashi Sankara had called out to one of his devotees, Sanandhyaya who was drying clothes on the other bank of the river. The ardent devotee paying heed to his master's words, unmindful of being drowned began crossing the river immediately. His devotion earned him lotuses for each of his step placed in the water by the grace of Sankara. He thus crossed the river without any harm. From hence he was called Padmapadha (lotus feet).

In Kashi another remarkable happening in the life of Sankara took place where once when He and His devotees were walking on the streets. Sankara and His disciples were confronted by an untouchable and his wife with four dogs who blocked their way. The disciples shouted out to the confronters to keep away from the path of their master. Immediately the man replied that in essence he was one with their master and how could he go away from Him!. His words were packed with Advaitic meaning that alerted Sankara that his confronters were no ordinary people. He realized them to be Lord Shiva and Parvati and the four Vedas in disguise. Sankara at once prostrated in front of them and sang the 'Manisha Panchakam'. And 'lo and behold' Lord Viswanatha and goddess Visalakshi appeared before Him in response.

When Sankara was sixteen years of age, was blessed with another sixteen years to spread the doctrine of Advaita by Maharshi Vedavyasa . Vedavyasa entered into an argument with Adi Sankara about the Bashyam written by Sankara for his Brahmasutras. On realizing that He had entered into an argument with none other than Vedavyasa, Sankara repented and the sage very happy about the way the Bashyam was presented blessed Sankara.

President Kalam's passion - igniting minds

with glorious dreams

The story of the 11th president of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is truly inspiring, particularly in these times characterized by religious strife and tension between scientific and humanitarian world-views. Dr. Kalam is a Muslim in a predominantly Hindu society. He is a rocket scientist with a deeply spiritual message. Throughout his career he has held highly responsible technical and scientific leadership positions. His experiences in leading such systems, however, did not shake his spiritual foundation; just the opposite. He told us: “The path of science can always wind through the heart. For me, science has always been the path to spiritual enrichment and self-realization.”

What initially inspired us to try to obtain an interview with him was this unusual quote from Dr. Abdul Kalam in his book Wings of fire:

“Each individual creature on this beautiful planet is created by God to fulfil a particular role. Whatever I have achieved in life is through His help, and an expression of His will. He showered His grace on me through some outstanding teachers and colleagues, and when I pay my tributes to these fine persons, I am merely praising His glory. All these rockets and missiles are His work through a small person called Kalam, in order to tell the several-million mass of India

to never feel small or helpless. We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness.”

Aside from the large majority of Hindus, India

also has the world’s second largest Muslim population and a minority of Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis and Jews. President Kalam is the inspiring leader of this amazingly heterogeneous multi-religious, multi-cultural, multi-lingual democratic nation – the world’s largest democracy.

" True divinity is a combination

of spirituality and social obligations. "

- President's Convocation

Address in 2001

When we asked Dr. Kalam about the relationship between religion and spirituality in such a complex society, he provided us with a clear and concise reply: “When religion transforms into a spiritual force, people become enlightened citizens with a value system. It is therefore most important that, for the happiness, peace and prosperity of mankind, we transform our religious forces into spiritual forces. ”

President Kalam’s passion is to meet with and speak with young people all around India, inspiring them with his vision of the future of India

and of the role of values and spirituality. Indeed, on 22 November, 2006, he addressed the students, faculty and guests of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (now Sri Sathya Sai University ) with the words:

“I am indeed honoured to deliver the 25th convocation address in the presence of Sri Sathya Sai Baba in this divine environment. My reverence to Baba and greetings to Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.V. Gokak, Professors, faculty members and staff who have been responsible for shaping not just graduates but human beings with great value systems drawn from our civilization’s heritage. At this point, I would like to quote a message from Baba: ‘Today people think that spirituality has no relationship to mundane life and vice versa. This is a big mistake. True divinity is a combination of spirituality and social obligations. National unity and social harmony are founded on spirituality. It is the divine that links spirituality and social existence.’”

This energetic and optimistic leader of more than a billion people told us: “I learnt in my life, that if you don’t do anything, you won’t have any problems. But if you do something, suddenly something will pull off. Problems should not become your master. You have to become the master of the problems. God gives us the opportunity to grow through problems. You have to concentrate on what can be done, not what you think cannot be done. If I could, I would remove the word ‘impossible’ from the dictionary. Defeat your problems and succeed.”

On the morning of November 23rd, 2001,

the President spent every precious

second with Baba

Inspired by the few minutes he spent in

His presence, the President burst out

with a beautiful poem...

When we then asked him about the core competence of business, President Kalam poetically replied: “The most important thing is righteousness, dharma. When there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. When there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world. You see the beautiful connectivity between these. The question before all of us today is, how do we get righteousness in the heart?”

A business leader who has for years focused on righteousness in the heart is G. Narayana, lovingly and respectfully referred to as ‘Guruji’ by those he inspires with his words of wisdom and his loving, generous behaviour. As you will now see, however, it took a crisis to awaken him to the beauty of his character.

Attending a Sadhana Camp is an experience that one can never fully appreciate until you have really been to one. Just being in the presence of our beloved Dada J P Vaswani evokes feelings that are hard to put into words. To know Dada is to love him. Somebody described Dada as a beautiful human being who believes that he is nothing, yet has the power to transform the lives of everyone he comes into contact with. That is truly the measure of a Master. There can never be enough words said even by the most eloquent of persons about this great soul that we all know and love. How fortunate we were to have been blessed with this wonderful opportunity to attend the camp and spend two days in his divine presence.

The last Sadhana Camp in the West for 2004 was held at the Beverly Garlands Holiday Inn –North Hollywood. An oasis of peace was created right amidst the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood Hills. One would never have known that there was a busy highway close to the Camp, so far removed were we from the real world for those two days.

The camp started on Friday the 8th of October 2004. All devotees were checked in by 5pm as the camp officially was scheduled to begin around 7pm. The devotees proceeded to the satsang hall, where attendance was to be marked daily, anxiously awaiting Dada’s arrival. The rules and regulations of the Camp were announced. The hall was beautifully decorated, creating an aura of peace and spirituality, which only became complete when Dada walked in looking as glowing as ever! His smile filled our being and our hearts were overflowing with love for him, as we gazed into his radiant eyes! Sadhu Vaswani’s melodious voice filled the hall with the immortal words from the Twelfth Chapter of the Bhagwad Gita. The Traditional Havan ceremony was conducted, Vachan from the Sukhmani Sahib and Nuri Granth were read out. The halls were filled with the powerful vibrations created by the harmonious voices of Krishna Kumari, Didi Nirmala and Dr Harish Wadhwani as they led us in the singing of Bhajans and Kirtans.

In his opening talk to his devotees, Dada welcomed everyone who had gathered here from different parts of the world. He reminded us of the words of one great person who said where two or three or more gather there does the Lord descend. He prayed for us that the grace of the lord would be on our gathering. That if we surrender in the feet of the lord he would take us to the supreme state, to the highest state. There is nothing more that we must desire than happiness which is peace of mind which can only be found at the feet of the lord. The lord calls out to us - to surrender at his feet. We have spent lifetimes going further and further away from the lord by turning our backs to him in pursuit of material gains.

Dada went on to tell us a Sufi story that talks about the different types of journeys that one takes in life. One that takes us away from the God. As every day passes we go further and further away from the lord. It is as if we are on a freeway and we pass the exit that we needed to take. For every mile that we go past, the further we will be away from our destination. So is it with our journey to the lord. For every day that we waste in other material pursuit’s the further we go away from God. It is like the Bhajan that Dr Harish sang earlier that evening “Jin Soya Tin Khoya , Jin Jagaya tin Paya” . The second is the journey back to the Lord.

There he gave us the example of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The journey of moving towards the Lord. Finally is the journey within.

That is the voice of this camp: Surrender to the lord and find your salvation. The lord is waiting at the door of our hearts to enter any time, and we do nothing to open the door. He keeps knocking “Darwazo Khol, Darwazo Kohl” but we are so busy in the material world we do not hear him. In the words of Sant Rahidas “Bahut Janam Bicharay thay Madhav, Yaha Janam tumharay Lekhay” We have received this human birth to make the journey back to God. This camp comes with the message to take a U turn to make the journey back to God. We would spend the next three days in finding the means and ways in which we can make this journey. Dada once again reminded us that we have come to his camp with a purpose, the camp has certain rules and regulations and they have been put there for a purpose. We will get from the camp as much as we put in, the more time we spend in silence the more we will be open to receive. We thank the lord and the more we spend in remembrance we will receive. The theme song for this camp Dada put into the following words, as we sang them at the end of every session. They were indelibly written into our hearts and minds.

Bheeti Bheeti Aayaan

Dilbar Tuhinjay Dwaar

Bhavsagar Ahay Bhari

Prabhu Paar Ukaar”

After the opening program we moved out for dinner and then recon verged at the Hall for an evening of informal camaraderie mingled with some information gathering and testing. A quiz had been planned along the lines of “Kaun Banega Bhakt” all complete with a lifeline. The teams were divided into four teams of four participants each. The NURI, ANJALI, MIRA AND RADHA teams. There were a lot of questions on the life of Sadhu Vaswani, Dada JP Vaswani, Hinduism and other world religions. The Radha Team was the winner but it was a close tie. At the close of that evening we were all reminded that the entire sangat would maintain silence the next morning until breakfast except when singing Bhajans and Kirtans.

The morning started with the Maun Vrit Session and we could feel the power of silence as we entered the satsang session. The vibrations in the air were so powerful and serene as everyone enjoyed bathing in this river of silence. We felt as if we could hear beyond our own Sadhana, the soothing harmony of the sounds of silence being produced by all the sangat here. The Havan was performed, as we heard the Sukhmani Sahib and Nuri Granth Vachan , sang the Aarti,, the Kirtans and Bhajans. We had a wonderful introduction to guided mediation with Dada. It’s nearly impossible to describe the awe and amazing reality of this experience.

After Breakfast we reconvened for a Bhajan program before Dada joined us for some Ruh Rihaan. We heard about some incidents in the life of Guru Nanak. As per the Hindu calendar, the Varsi fell on October 9th 2004. Dada explained to us that although we celebrate Guru Nanak’s Birthday in November every year he was actually born in the month of April on Kartik ji Puranmaasi. Guru Nanak Dev left his body on this particular day. It is the day when you go to meet your beloved. Your death is like your wedding day, the day your soul is reunited with the Lord. As long we do not chant the Lord’s name we are like dead corpse. When we gather together and sing the name of the Lord we forget ourselves the world around us. That is the power of Naam- The name of the Lord.

It was Guru Nanak’s message that God is one. Our human birth is to find our way back to the lord. To see the light within, to hear the sound within. Our body is made up of nine gates. We have to open the tenth gate. The Dasmai Dwar as Dada calls it. The best way to find that is with the practice of Silence. It is in the wonderful womb of silence that God is born within us. Jesus once said “ Devotion is found in 10 paths : 9 are found in silence and 10th is found in solitude.”

The Ruh Rihaan ended and the Sangat moved onto Lunch and Rest time. The evening was planned with a Walkathon with Dada as a fund raiser for the Cataract Eye Surgeries donated by the Sadhu Vaswani Mission in Pune to the Blind.

The evening session of the Second day started with Bhajans and Kirtan as is the tradition. After which we had a beautiful Informal Question and Answer session with Dada. Dada graciously answered the questions of each and every one of his devotees. Dada has a wonderful way of guiding us and teaching us about things that we are confused about and or never been able to grasp their inner meaning. The simplicity and clarity in his words enlighten us greatly and lead many of us to make affirmations and change our lives leading them as per his teachings. Truly the best Guru Dakshina we can offer Dada is by being a reflection of his teachings.

A live Auction of a Beautiful portrait of our beloved Dada was held and the proceeds would add to the growing fund for the Cataract surgeries needed in India. After Dinner that evening an entertaining cultural program was organized. We saw some nice dances performed by young girls based on the life of Sri Krishna and Radha. Kumar Bhavnani performed a solo skit which showed him searching for Krishan Kanhaiya all over the Universe calling Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva only to realize that his Krishan Kanhaiya resides in the Sacred Bhoomi Pune. We ended the evening watching a documentary about our Beloved Dada called “The Man with the Singing Heart”.

The last morning we all practiced Maun Vrit again having enjoyed the experience so much the earlier day. The Satsang session was especially powerful as everyone wanted to make get the most out of the experience for we all knew that soon the camp would come to a close. After breakfast we all eagerly awaited the next Ruh Rihaan session with Dada as he was going to share with us the Sadhana that we must all do to make the journey back to God. Dada once again asked God to bless us all and Dada asked his devotees after spending three days at this camp we must take back something things with us as we left the camp. They are the three S maxims Shanti, Sik and Seva and lovingly in jest told us to leave behind the fourth S “Soap” that most people take when they leave a hotel room.

Elaborating on these three maxims he said our body is the temple of the lord. We must keep not our bodies clean and pure but also our thoughts and deeds. Do not allow temptation to enter your minds for once it does it becomes your master. Do not allow thoughts of jealousy, and hatred. A thought that gives you relish means you have lost the battle and you will ultimately drag you to the ditch of impurity. As we see at the entrance of every temple a Bell that you ring and also a Lamp “Jyot” or light burning. So is it with our body, there it burns within each of us an inextinguishable light, the temple “Jyot” is merely a symbol of our inner light. Presently the light within us is covered with many veils. The sounds and bells are also being rung within us. Guru Nanak calls this sound “ Anhad Shabd” He once again reiterated his message from the days before - the purpose of this human birth is to see the light within and hear the unstuck bells of the universe.

To do this you must make the most important pilgrimage which is the inner journey and the only way is for us to sit in silence. Wherever you go there is noise pollution. Even as there are particles of Dust that cling to us, so do particles of noise cling to our minds.

The only way we can cleanse it is to bathe in the waters of silence. Make as many dips as you can but minimum once every twenty four hours. Repeating the lord’s name will cleanse your inner self. The problem of spiritual life is the problem of inner purification. Always think before you spend your time talking, and ask yourself is what I have to say better than silence and then speak or stay silent. That is the first maxim.. Shanti , to sit in Silence.

The second Sadhana is Sik ..the longing for the Lord, that deep desire should arise within us where all our thoughts and actions should be for him. The fastest way to the Lord is having a deep desire for him. It is gift to us from the Lord. If we should have this deep desire it would take just one lifetime only to be with the lord. As we sing our eyes should flow with tears for the lord “De De De Asaan Khey De, Param Padarath, Kamal Charan Laaya Sik Ain Pyar” The third and last Sadhana is Seva. Follow this maxim that you must do as much good as you can to as many as you can for as long as you can.

We carried on the session without taking a break as there was a popular demand for Dr Harish to sing some more Bhajans. The Sangat had been enjoying them so much that they wanted to have experience once more the sweetness of the devotional lyrics of Nuri, Anjali Bhajans and divine melodies along with the endless chanting of Kirtans.

Finally we had another Short question and Answer session after which Dada said his Goodbyes to us. The atmosphere was very poignant and overflowing with emotions. Knowing that we would soon be separated from our beloved Dada caused many eyes to flow with tears that morning. Dada personally blessed each one of us. A few attendees of the other camps who had followed Dada to these camps also shared their experiences. The Caribbean Camp devotees had adapted a poem for Dada and read it to him here.

Gurus are the sculptors of our lives

How fortunate we are to be shaped by you

In your hands may we flourish and grow

Time spent with out goes simply by

Your teachings are the wings

On which we must now fly

Thank you for being simply the best

How much you have helped us, You will never know

A passionate teacher, A true prize

Loving, caring, true and wise.

On leaving your care, we must look back to grow

Upon these bright memories we lay our goodbyes.

The camp ended with everyone saying their good we asked many of the devotees attending the camp their thoughts about the camp. Everyone said that they happy to be here, and were feeling quite blissful asking Dada again and again to come back soon to Los Angeles. One lady remarked " I made new relationships and found myself being adopted by a new family, the loving family of Dada’s devotees and more importantly being with Dada I found out more about myself, " Many said that they were leaving the camp feeling uplifted, calmer, more inspired to have a regular Sadhana routine, and find a way to live in the world and be happy, but still follow dharma. We all enjoy ourselves, relax, and reflect. We think of this camp like being in a space station, far from home and free of daily pressures, and that we should take this opportunity to reflect on our lives and hopefully gain some useful perspectives

In retrospect we must say that everyone enjoyed the camp, they all got a chance to relax and reflect while having a wonderful time and left eagerly looking forward to attending the next retreat or Sadhana Camp.

CHINNA KATHA

- A Little Story from Bhagavan

the divine and his dear devotee

There was in Bengal

a devotee named Madhavadasa, who, when his wife died, realised that he had lost his “home,” for his grihalakshmi (goddess of prosperity) had passed away. So he gave all his riches to the poor, donned an ochre robe and wandered alone as a pilgrim to the shrine of Lord Jagannath (another form of Lord Krishna) of Puri in the state of Orissa,

India. There he did such deep penance that the Concrete Image soon became the Abstract Reality and the Abstract Reality became a perpetual Vision.

He lost all sense of time and space, of chith (awareness) and achith (non-awareness). Then the Lord, with Mother Subhadra, His Energy Aspect, moved towards him and placed before him the gold plate used by the priests to keep food in front of idol of Lord Jagannatha in the sanctum sanctorum. When Madhavadasa awoke to his gross surroundings, he saw the gold plate with the pile of delicious food upon it. He ate his fill and returned to his inner paradise which he had left for a while.

Meanwhile, the plate was reported lost, assumed to be stolen, and discovered by the seashore near Madhavadasa, who was promptly arrested and led to the lockup by some very efficient policemen. He was beaten mercilessly but did not seem to mind it a bit. The chief priest that night had a dream in which Lord Jagannatha asked him not to bring food for the Lord again into the shrine, “You bring food for Me, and when I eat it, you start beating Me!” Then he realised that it was the entire Leela (sport) of the divine to demonstrate the devotion of Madhavadasa and teach others the real nature of Bhakthi (devotion).

Some scholars and pundits of Puri did not feel happy at this sudden rise to fame of a stranger from Bengal. So they called Madhavadasa into their midst and challenged him to an intellectual duel. Madhavadasa was not a pundit of that type. He had learnt the Sastras only as a staff to help him walk, as a guide to action; not as a stick to beat others with. So he accepted defeat even before the bout began and signed a statement to that effect, which the leading pundit was only too glad to accept because Madhavadasa had a reputation for scholarship which was really frightening. The pundit hurried to Kasi with that token of victory. He waved it before a gathering of scholars and demanded that they should all pay him homage as superior even to Madhavadasa.

But the Lord will not allow His devotee to be humiliated. When the signed statement was opened and read, they were all amazed to find that it was a statement declaring that it was Madhavadasa who had achieved victory and it was the pundit who had signed underneath acknowledging his own defeat! The Lord will not be silent when His Bhaktha (devotee) is insulted or harmed.
