AUM SAI RAM

The Holi Festival is over but it will come back next year, in the month of February or March, when spring has sprung and the moon is full in the sky. On the eve, the Holika Dahan is celebrated when an immense straw man is burnt to symbolize the victory of Good over evil. In the olden times, the play of colours and rejoicing which followed the next day was called ‘Phagoon’ and elders used to say that it was ‘La Fete des Fous’. People were intoxicated with happiness; hence they behaved like mad and played with colours.

Moreover, the lesson that we learn from the legend associated with the celebration of Holi is worth retaining. Hiranya Kasipu was a very bad and cruel king. He had obtained paranormal powers after he did penance for Lord Brahma but he used his powers only to harm others. His son, Bhakta Prahlad, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu; when he was still a child, he started to oppose himself to all the misdeeds of his demoniac dad. This infuriated his papa, Hiranya Kasipu. The latter was very arrogant and he believed that he was greater than God; he detested both Lord Vishnu and His bhakta, the young Prahlad. Several times and by sundry means, the king attempted on the life of the kid but each time, Prahlad escaped from the deadly grip of his papa by the mere utterance of the name of the Lord - Jaya Vishnu!

However, King Hiranya Kasipu did not accept defeat; he continued to think of a means to destroy his son. One day, he suddenly remembered that his beloved sister, Holika had obtained a boon from the Gods; she was not destructible by fire! He, then, ordered Holika to take Bhakta Prahlad in her arms and to sit on a heap of burning firewood. Chamatkaar! Lord Vishnu intervened again! Holika was burnt to ashes and Bhakta Prahlad came out alive!

King Hiranya Kasipu learnt his lesson and we too, Embodiments of Love, should learn from the story that we should never defy God. There is nothing greater than God. God is all pervasive. His Will only, and always, prevails. Let us keep this in mind until next year.
