In spite of the provocations, Shri Rama was very much ready to pardon Ravana, provided he repent his mistake and relinquishes the custody of mother Sita. Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana also pleaded with his brother, to abandon the sinful desire of getting Sita. Ravana knew intuitively that he can never aspire for Sita. He would perish, the moment he laid his hands on Sita, due to a curse. Hence, though Sita was in the custody of demons in "Ashoka vana", he could only plead with her to relent. Mother Sita never looked at him. She used to pluck a grass and assuming the grass as Ravana, she would address the grass thus: "My Lord Rama would punish you soon. But Ravana with his big ego and pride boasts about his invincibility. He used to tell Sita, that `no human can stand his might'. In the same vain he used to make derogatory remarks about Shri Rama and his monkey army. His own arrogance brought the end of "Rakshasa clan" baring Shri Vibishana, who surrendered at the feet of Rama, abandoning his sinful brother and finding him incorrigible. Rest is History, nay His Story. Sairam.
