In ancient days, when Gurukula system of education was in vogue, Brahmacharis(celebates) learned from the preceptors in Ashrams situated in forests. There, the disciples have served the preceptor, brought firewood, collected fruits and tubers, tended the cows etc and then learned the lessons from the preceptor. They stayed in the Ashram of Guru, they took food there and spent around 10 years. They learned all the arts and crafts, they studied scriptures, learned the "Vedas" in addition to intricacies of warfare etc. After completion of schooling in the Gurukul, they offered to the Guru, Offerings of valuables and other things as desired by the Guru. But neither the Guru was greedy, nor the disciples misers. They willingly and whole heartedly offered "Gurudakshina". After completion of gurukul, they returned to their native places and started living family life. A man after completing all house hold duties and after reaching 60 years or so entrusts the family in the custody of eldest son, and they retire to the forests to adopt "Sanyasa"(renunciate).Likewise, each individual has to pass through many stages in life but ultimately their aim is to proptiate the Divine by meditation and other austerities. But, nowadays no such system is practised. Even people who retire from service, go for re-employment to earn money. Money is considered as the be all and end all of life. In such peculiar circumstances, when most of the people are deluded by worldly ambitions, many saints and seers have incarnated to guide the people towards higher life. When the entire humanity descends to lower ideals, the Divine had to take birth to guide them. Now the present generation which faces such worst conditions, are led back to their correct path, after convincing them, the ephemeral nature of the illusory pleasures of the world. But, we are given the choice of either pursuing noble ways or to remain stagnant. Everyone, by his own experience finds that the earthly pleasures are a 'mirage'. Then each one turns towards spiritual life to redeem them. Sairam.
