In spiritual arithmatic, 3-1=1.

"Slow and steady wins the race". Hence Swami cautions us as, "Start Early, Drive Slowly and reach safely". Now, what is the destination which beckons us to travel? Swamy says that once the journey is completed, you will realise that you have travelled from yourself to yourself. How funny! The starting place and destination is one and the same! Then where is the distance involved, efforts of travel etc? Yes, Spirituality is an esoteric subject which can not be understood but realised. Shri Ramana Maharishi, has replied in the same tenor to the seekers. When somebody questioned about the subject "Self Realisation", immediately Shri Ramana quipped, "What is there to realise"? You are already That. Only the false idea that one is yet to realise should be abandoned. As long as there is duality in the mind, then three will automatically arise in the mind. A subject, an object and the way to realise the object. Hence Swami used the 'mirror' example. You are looking at the Mirror. There is a reflection of You in total without any distinction or difference. One is real, the other one 'reflection' is illusion. When you take the mirror out, there will be only One left in place of three. Hence in the Spiritual arithmatic 3-1= 1 (3 is object, mirror and reflection), the one you substract is mirror and when you remove it you alone is there. Sairam.
