Guest guest
A Friend for lifeOn a dark night while the little town of Brightonwood slept a robber walked along the side roads wide awake. Frustrated with his own evil habits he decided to himself, “Tonight is the last night I will steal. Whatever I get today I will use its wealth to better myself and stop this life of walking in the dark while others enjoy restful sleep.” So thinking he walked toward the part of town where the extremely rich and famous resided. He spotted in the midst of the huge mansions, the largest castle. Oh, it was so beautiful! He saw a tower and at the top of the tower was a light. “The master’s room”, he thought to himself. “I bet that is where all the riches will be”, he said with a grin.He broke quietly through a side door and climbed the spiral staircase. It was deathly quiet inside. The robber feared that he may be caught. “I am so sick of this fear within me”, he thought to himself. “At least it is my last night. From tomorrow I too will sleep restfully. Forgive me God,” he pleaded, “only today make me rich then I will never disobey your rules ever again.”He had reached the top of the tower. The lights in the room were still on. “Was the master still awake?” he mumbled. “It is after 2 AM, does he never sleep?”The robber waited quietly outside the room. Strange enough there was no sound inside the room. “Maybe he forgot to shut off the light. Maybe there is no one there after all.” Hoping for the best in trembling fear the robber sneaked into the master’s room. And what did he see? Golden vases…pots of jewels…an armoire that was wide open and inside were bundles of currency. “Oh my Lord” he thought “God is indeed merciful. Since it is my last night of stealing He is making sure that I have enough to lead a decent life.”Suddenly there was a loud bang. A revolver! “Oh my gosh…someone is here and he has a gun.” The robber was shaken and was rooted in his spot. Suddenly the master of the home came before him. He thundered, “I will not return a penny to you. Do you understand? A deal is a deal. What I took was mine and now you cannot ask from me.” The robber was stunned. “What return”, he stammered. “Has not John sent you?” stormed the master. “No… I…I…I...”. “I what?” grunted the master sticking the revolver in the robber’s neck. “I what?”“I…I…came to steal…you…you…see…It was supposed to be my last night…I promise…I swear by God!”“Robber…last night…you mean you are not …uh uh…John, or sent by him?” “No”, stammered the robber. “Sir”, the robber pleaded, “you can call the police, but can I ask you one thing? Do you not sleep, sir? It is 3 AM and you have such a beautiful bed. I did not see anyone in it.”“Sleep!” exclaimed the master. “How can I? Who will protect my wealth? I have with great use of my intelligence taken the wealth from others and made it mine. Do you think I am so stupid that after using such intelligence and gaining from it such profit…I would have the time to rest? I do not sleep…I rarely have the time to eat…I do not have any time to love my loved and close ones. I please them with these riches. I do not work hard. All day I think and try to get wealth easily and of course those that work for me receive only a small tiny beggar bit of my loot. See how intelligent I am.”The fear of the robber suddenly vanished. “Dear Lord”, he thought to himself, “I am standing not before a rich man but before the poorest man who has all the worldly wealth but not himself. He has no love…no peace…no purity…no honesty…no kindness. He is only a stone…a part of his castle.”“What are you thinking?” asked the master.“Sir, you taught me a lesson that I would never have learnt. I just realized how much I have that I have never thought as wealth. Sir, I can sleep soundly…I am never afraid that anyone can take anything from me. I eat…I long for the love of my loved ones and I love them. I am afraid when I steal…and that is good because I still have my Self, my conscience and my love for God within. Sir, even though you can send me to jail today I would still be more free than you…for after serving my term, I would return to my Self. But you Sir are in the biggest prison of all. You steal from your self, Sir…your own conscience…your own self respect. Your this golden castle is itself a prison.”“I am leaving Sir richer than I came. You gave me the wealth of realization…the realization that the richest man is that one who fears only one thing…losing his companionship with his indweller. That indweller is the only wealth of every living being. I thank you Sir for returning Him to me.The Lord had kept His promise. He entered to steal and found he had broken into the poorest home. He left the castle with nothing in his hands…for the hand of the indweller was now entwined with his.Hold the hand of God. Aspire not to be rich.
