When Shri Ramana Maharishi was undergoing surgery for the cancerous growth above elbow on the hand, he asked the Doctor not to apply aneasthesia to him and operate as it is. The surgery was performed as requested by Him. Any body can aver that the pain would be unbearable. How on earth He tolerated such pain is still a mystry. When enquired by some devotee about this, Shri Ramana told him, Yes, pain is there but I am NOT in the pain. Why I narrate this episode is that the body consciousness should be relinquished by every body. But we are not capable of exhibiting such degree of renunciation. However we should slowly practice this principle. If we are clear about the fact that the Body is not us and we are the indestructable Atma, then we can start disassociating with the body consciousness. Swami in each lecture emphasise this plain truth in several ways. He addresses the gatherings as "Embodiment of Divine Atma. On every occasion he himself has demonstrated the Truth. He undertook the Paralytic stroke and subsequent Heart Attacks and underwent all the effects for a full week. When his hip joint sustained fracture and the ball broken, he exhibited utmost disinterest in the body's pain and when the Doctors advised him few weeks of bed rest, Swami started giving Dharsan within a day or two. There must be excruciating pain. But Swami is never bothered by the suffering his body underwent and continued with his mission. Hence we must also tolerate such troubles by observing utmost 'forebearance'. Sairam.
