Recite the name of God with Love, Faith and Devotion.

Initially Nama Japa will tend to be mechanical. Of course the effect will be there but if you do it with love, devotion and faith, it anhilates quickly the accumulated burdens of the past known as Karma Pala or Vasanas. Swami says 'The more you near me, the more is the chance of your burning. It is not physical. It is the nearness of the Heart or SELF or ATMA. The burning constitues 'the karmas (the balance we acquire assiduously over many births). Hence we must seek the nearness of Swami in our Heart. Of course, the physical nearness to Swami's form also has special effects. Hence avail all the chances for Physical proximity as well as inner proximity. Even if we are not able to go to Parthy or Whitefield due to various reasons or circumstances, we can always feel His nearness in our Heart(spiritual). But everything is a slow but sure and steady process. Hence participate in Bajans or Nagarasankeertan or reciting the 108 or 1008 names in unison with other devotees. As and when our impurities are slowly burnt up by the Nama Japa, we go nearer to HIM. As we go near, we are burnt up vigourously. Yes, it is the impurities which are to be burnt. A small example Swami often quotes: "As you boil the butter to get pure ghee, the process takes some time and at one stage when the impurities in the butter are burnt and evaporates, we get bad smell even. At that time you have to wait patiently. When all impurities are burnt, you catch the pure smell of Ghee. Immediately you can put down the fire. Hence till we are converted as "Ghee", the process has to be on. You simply recite the Name of your pet God. Continue doing the same without hankering for any result or counting the time spent etc. Leave everything to HIM. Our duty is to recite the Name. The result will become evident at the appropriate time and appropriate place. Sairam.
