Karunanidhi has thanked the Sri Satya Sai Trust for agreeing to upgrade the Kandaleru-Poondi canal, which would fulfil the water needs of the city.Replying on Sunday to a recent letter from Sai Baba seeking a co-ordinator for the project, Mr. Karunanidhi said the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department would be appointed as the co-ordinator from Tamil Nadu to complete the project.The letter from the Trust said the 25-km canal from zero point in Uthukottai to Poondi would be

repaired to facilitate a free flow of Krishna water. It may be recalled that an appeal to the Trust to carry out the canal repair work in Tamil Nadu limit was made at a function held here in January to felicitate Sai Baba. No repair work since 1993A PWD official said no major repair work had been carried out on the canal since its construction in 1993 as part of the Telugu Ganga project. "We used to remove the silt deposited in the canal and take up minor repairs," he pointed out.The repair works would involve concrete lining of the canal to prevent leakages and seepage, he added.
