I would sit at her knee and look up from the floor and ask what she was doing. She informed me that she was embroidering.I told her that it looked like a mess from where I was. As from the underside I watched her work within the boundaries of the little round hoop that she held in her hand, I complained to her that it sure looked messy from where I sat. She would smile at me, look down and gently say, ‘My child, you go about your playing for awhile, and when I am finished with my embroidering, I will put you on my knee and let you see it from my side.’ I would wonder why she was using dark threads along with the bright ones and why they seemed so jumbled from my view. A few minutes would pass and then I would hear Mother's voice say, ‘Child, come sit on my knee.’ This I did only to be surprised and thrilled to see a beautiful flower or a sunset.I could not believe it, because from underneath it looked so messy.Then Mother would say to me, ‘My child, from underneath it did look messy and jumbled, but you did not realise that there was a pre-drawn plan on the top. It was a perfect design…..and I was simply following it. Now look at it from my side and you will see what I was doing.’Many times through the years I have looked up to my beloved Sai and said, ‘Oh Baba, what are you doing?’ He has answered, ‘I am embroidering your life.’ I say, ‘But it looks like a mess to me. It seems so jumbled. The threads seem so dark and messy. When I was young I troubled my mum endlessly, asking her why her needlework design was so messy.And she very patiently told me to wait till she completed it - so that I could see how it looked. Guest guest Posted March 29, 2007 Report Share Posted March 29, 2007 Sai Ram Sis Madhvi,I've been reading most of your articles but this particular story has been on my mind for the past few days.I have spent so many years of my life doing 'cross-stitch' in the past - some of the pieces are so huge and intricate that they may take even years to complete! However, I was so inspired by the beauty of each piece of art which I chose to work on that it did not matter to me how long it will take or how difficult it was going to be. I loved every minute of it!My children used to look over my shoulder while I was sewing and they had made similar remarks about how messy or how odd it had looked and questioned how I knew which color to use or how to fit the design together. And I would tell them that they should come see it again when it is completed because it will be beautiful!It is so wonderful to picture this process as how Swami works with us. I can feel the happiness and the bliss that He would feel as He embroiders each and every detailed part of our lives. Yes, I to face similar situations while I am working on my paintings. Onlookers would say, how do I know which color would go where? how would you bring exactness when you do the portrait? Some would say, oh, the turpentine smells so bad! how could you work in such environment? and I just smile! Because, I love painting and I know what would be the final outcome with my experience of oil painting. Of course, it took years of consistent efforts brought me at this stage which is very difficult to explain to anybody. And when now people see my work, they are amazed and think I must be making tons of money...(heheh, that part unfortunately is not true, though!!!) I do enjoy painting and always pray to Baba to give me enough inspiration and strength to do all the work that I have on my mind to complete before I return to HIM. Take care.
