In Hinduism, God isnt like humans- Gurus have repeatedly stressed the foms we see were created merely for us to make the job of worshipping them easier. In fact, thats why advanced Sadhaks are asked to worship the Yantra, as it is a closer representation of Divine energies. Hinduism says God exists as SAt-Chit-Ananda, or Truth-Conciousness-Bliss- nothing else. Thats why the Upanishadssaid " Not this, not that " , as it couldnt be defined as anything. As for animals & plants(yes why forget them, since Hindus have believed they are alive for 1000s years, but science just last 60-70 years or so, & that too due to Indian Scentist). Plants & animals are in contact with Universal conciousness all the time. They are directly controlled by Nature, so have no concept of God, good bad evil etc. In one sense, hence, they are better than us. But their conciousness is one of ignorance, while humans are given chance to wilfully enter Gods conciousness.............. or not. God is conciosness or awareness- that lives in the Heart, that is always in Sat-chit-ananda. Thats what the Masters have told us. As per hinduism, man is not image of god. Hinduism says human being is a very important stage for gaining Moksha, as no animal, no asrua and no deva can get Moksha unless he becomes human being Human being is standing on a cross road from where one road goes to moksha, one to devas, another to asura, and one going back to animal. I tried to give a logical answer in short. " Only man can look upward " mean only man can think progressively. This puts him much ahead of all other animals.
