Namaste all. Thanks babaji, I couldn't agree more on your comments

about 'Viraha Madhuri'- the Bliss of Divine Love in Separation.

Here are more from my old posts:

Viraha Madhuri Song - by Bengali Saint Chandidas

In this sublime song, the Rasik Saint Chandidas was descrbing to his

Mistress Radharani about the pitiable plight of Her Divine Beloved:

Ah Lady! ah Lady! hear a word,

At length having seen (him) I have come again;

Looking, looking, (my) pain increased,

Whatever was done profited not.

He binds not his hair, he girds not his waist,

He eats not food, he drinks not water.

The colour of gold Šyâm has become,

Constantly remembering thy Name.

He does not recognize any one, his eye does not wink,

He remains with fixed look like a doll of wood.

I placed a piece of wool to his nose,

Then only I perceived that he breathed,

There is breath, but there remains no life,

Delay not, my happiness depends on it!

Cha.n.dî Dâs saith (it is) the anguish of separation

In his heart, the only medicine is Radha.

Viraha Madhuri Song - by Saint Suradas

Gopi friends say to sulking, withdrawn Radhaji, about the trials that

Sri Krishna too has had to endure for the sake of Her Love.

" Ever since your name has entered Hari's ear

It's been 'Radha, oh Radha,' an infinite mantra,

a formula chanted to a secret string of beads.

Off by the Jamuna he sits, in a grove

far from his friends and happiness and home.

He yearns for you. He has turned into a yogi:

constantly wakeful, whatever the hour.

Sometimes he spreads himself a bed of tender leaves;

sometimes he recites your treasurehouse of fames;

Sometimes he pledges silence; he closes his eyes

and meditates on every feature of your frame -

His eyes the invocation, his heart the oblation,

and his mutterings the food to feed the priests

who tend the fire.

In all these ways Syam's body has wasted away.

Says Sur, let him see you. Fulfill his desire. "

Om Namah Shivaya.

Thanks BabaJi and PyariJi for reposting your wonderfull definition.

So it the Viraha which has to be explored, which is within us. And due

to the karmic debts, kaliyug, lot of us still get satisfied with the

lower manifestaion of viraha / Love.

May be enlightment is something enjoying Viraha(not in a wrong sense

but enjoying viraha for the purpose of making other understand viraha)

and Moksha is reunion with supreme unable to withstand the Viraha. Pls

correct me if iam wrong.

Shivaya Namah Aum.

Thiruchitrambalam.

Senthil.

You cant be more correct than this senthil!!!

Viraha's energies are greater than that of any Yoga, any meditation,

any japa.

Lucky are those who get Viraha...that z why I give more importance

to Gopis ...not Akrur

Namaste Babaji.

Yoga of 'Vi-Yoga' - Yoga of Yearning is described below as

Her Sakhi reveals to Sri Krishna how lucky Sri Radha is!

— THE NINTH SONG OF GITA GOVINDA KAVYA —

by Sri Jayadeva Kaviraja

stana-viniHitam api hAram udAram |

sa manute kRzA-tanur iva bhAram ||11||

rAdhikA tava virahe kezava || dhruva-padam ||

An exquisite garland lying on her breasts

Is a burden to the frail wasted girl.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

sarasa-masRNam api malayaja-paGkam |

pazyAti viSam iva vapuSi sazaGkam ||12||

Moist sandalbalm. smoothed on her body

Feels like dread poison to her.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

zvasita-pavanam anupama-pariNAham |

madana-dahanam iva vahati sadAham ||13||

The strong wind of her own sighing

Feels like the burning fire of love.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

dizi dizi kirati sajala-kaNa-jAlam |

nayana-nalinam iva vigalita-nAlam ||14||

Her eyes shed tears everywhere

Like dew from lotuses with broken stems.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

tyajati na pAni-talena kapolam |

bAla-zazinam iva sAyam alolam ||15||

Her eyes see a couch of tender shoots,

But she imagines a ritual bed of flames.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

nayana-viSayam api kisalaya-talpaM |

kalayati vihita-hutAza-vikalpam ||16||

She presses her palm against her cheek,

Wan as a crescent moon in the evening.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

harir iti harir iti japati sakarNam |

viraha-vihita-maraNeva nikAmaM ||17||

" Hari! Hari! " she chants passionately,

As if destined to die through harsh neglect.

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion.

sri-jayadeva-bhaNitam iti gItam |

sukhayatu kezava-padam upanItam |||18||

May singing Jayadeva's song

Give pleasure to the worshipper at Krishna's feet!

Krishna, Radhika suffers in your desertion..

sa romAJcati sIt-karoti vilapaty utkampate tAmyati

dhyAyaty udbhramati pramIlati pataty udyati mUrcchaty api |

etAvaty atanu-jvare vara-tanur jIven na kiM te rasAt

svar-vaidya-pratimA prasIdasi yadi tyakto'nyathA hastakaH ||19||

She bristles with pain, sucks in breath,

Cries, shudders, gasps,

Broods deep, reels, starnmers,

Falls, raises herself, then faints.

When fevers of passion rage so high,

A frail girl may live by your charm.

If you feel sympathy, Krishna,

Play godly healer!

Or Death may take her.

smarAturaM daivata-vaidya-hRdya

tvad-aGga-saGgAmRta-mAtra-sAdhyam |

nivRtta-bAdhAM kuruSe na rAdhAm

upendra vajrAd api dAruNo'si ||20||

Divine physician of her heart,

The love-sick girl can only be healed

With elixir from your body.

Free Radha from her torment, Krishna

Or you are crueler

Than Indra's dread thunderbolt.

kandarpa-jvara-saMjvarAtura-tanor azcaryam asyAz ciraM

cetaz candana-candramaH-kamalinI-cintAsu santAmyati |

kintu klAnti-vazena zItala-tanuM tvAm ekam eva priyaM

dhyAyantI rahasi sthitA katham api kSINA kSaNaM prANiti ||21||

While her body lies sick

From smoldering fever of love,

Her heart suffers strange slow suffocation

In mirages of sandalbalm, moonlight, lotus pools.

When exhaustion forces her to meditate on you,

On the cool body of her solitary lover,

She feels secretly revived

For a moment the feeble girl breathes life.

kSaNam api virahaH purA na sehe

nayana-nimIlana-khinnayA yayA te |

zvasiti katham asau rasAla-zAkhAM

cira-viraheNa vilokya puSpitAgram ||22||

She found your neglect in love unbearable before,

Despairing if you closed your eyes even for a moment.

How will she live through this long desertion,

Watching flowers on tips of mango branches?

(English Translation by B.S. Miller)

Namaste.

The authority on Bhakti, Sri Narada muni said in his Bhakti Darshan:

anirvacanIyaM premasvarUpam

mUkAsvAdanavat

prakAzyate kvApi pAtre

guNa rahitaM kAmanA rahitaM

prati kSaNa vardha mAnaM

avicchinnaM sUkSmataraM

anubhava rUpam

(Narada Bhakti Sutra 51-54)

The intrinsic nature of Paraa Bhakti (perfect Divine Love)

" defies exact and precise analysis, definition, or description. "

It is like the experience of delightful taste, and joy which a dumb

man has when he tastes something sweet.

The Divine Love, neverthless, manifests itself, in one - whosoever it

be - when one has made oneself fit for such manifestation (being

blessed by His Divine Grace).

The self-less Love for Lord is unmotivated,

free from all chracteristic tendencies to selfish action,

it is of the nature of an integral subjective experience,

subtler than the subtlest,

manifesting itself spontaneously and

expanding every moment effortlessly!

Another definition is attempted in the Bhakti Scripture:

sarvathA dhvaMsa rahitaM satyapi dhvaMsa kAraNe

yad bhAva bandhanaM yUnoH sa premA parikIrtitaH

" Even when all the existing causes for perishing and

forsaking do not cause its perishment at any time,

this indestructible emotional bondage between

the lovers is glorified as sacred divine love. "

(Ujjvala-nilamani - Sri Roopa)

Bhakti Yoga Rasavatar, Gauranga Mahaprabhu

had also declared:

kaitava rahitam prema nahi bhavati maanushe loke

yadi bhavati kasya viraho virahe satyapi ko jivati

For such an elevated state of perfect, selfless Divine love is not

possible to exist in the mortal world. Even if it seems to be present,

then where is the question of separation of the soul from its Divine

Beloved, Paramatma in a true sense? Who (soul) is able to live if the

separation is for real?

He too prayed for:

mama janmani janman Izvare!

bhavatAd bhaktir ahaitukI tvayi

O Lord! Bless me with such un-motivated,

self-less Divine Love, life after life!

Jaya Sri Radhey !

AhAre viratiH samasta-viSaya-grAme nivRttiH parA

nAsAgre nayanaM yad etad aparaM yac caikatAnaM manaH |

maunaM cedam idaM ca zUnyam akhilaM yad vizvam AbhAti te

tad brUyAH sakhi yoginI kim asi bhoH kiM viyoginy api ||

Averse from eating, turned away from every object of the senses,

and this too, that your eye is fixed in trance;

again, your mind is single-pointed,

and then this silence, and the fact

that all the world to you seems empty.

Tell me, gentle friend, are you a yogini

or a viyogini?

(Padyavali 238)

When asked by Her Sakhi as quoted above,

virahini Radharani replied:

saGgama viraha vikalpe

varamiha viraho na saGgamas tasmAt

saGge sa iha tathaikas

tribhuvana mapi tanmayatvaM virahe

(Padyavali. 239)

Radhaji says in 'Padyavali', for an elevated pure devotee separation

from her Divine Beloved is considered as the best blessing because

there is greater bliss in separation as the lover experiences her

Beloved in everything and everywhere, the three worlds seem pervaded

by her Beloved.

Radhaavatar Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu had also prefered 'vipralambha

rasa' (Divine Love in Separation) to 'sambhoga sringara rasa' (Divine

Union in Love).

adRSTe darzanotkaNThA

dRSTe vizleSa bhIrutA

nA dRSTeNa na dRSTeNa

bhvatA labhyate sukhaM

The Rasik devotees do enjoy the transcendental pleasure of union,

oneness with Lord Krishna and even during those blessed moments, they

fear the impending distress of separation from Him.

Separation from their Beloved Krishna is naturally a period of

spiritual agony.

In this way, day and night Rasik devotees are ordained to experience

Divine distress in both states of union and separation.

Jaya Sri Radhey!
