KOLLAM: V Sugunanandan, father of Mata Amritanandamayi , passed away at his

house on the Amritapuri Ashram premises on Monday morning.

 

He was 86. ‘Amma’ was away at Kolkata, when her father breathed his last.

 

The time of cremation would be fixed after the Mata’s arrival though it has

been tentatively fixed for Tuesday.

 

Hundreds of Mata devotees, and people from all walks of life, including students

of Amrita Engineering College, paid their homage to Sugunanandan at the hospital

where his body was kept.

 

Born in a fishermen family at Vallikkavu, Sugunanandan had worked as a

fisherman. He was first a group leader of fishermen and later their employer.

 

Sugunanandan had been actively involved in socio-political activities, as also

in the fields of arts, culture and sports and contributed much for the

development of these in the area.

 

A Sanskrit scholar, Sugunanandan was a kathakali artiste.

 

He joined the Kathakali Yogam of Thekkayyathu Ramankunju Asan and Sree Krishna

‘vesham’ marked his debut. He had performed various veshams as a kathakali

artiste.
