Guest guest
Finally, major news media have reported that deficiencies in Vitamin D and DHA are very serious and wide spread. This is what Dr Joel Fuhrman, MD has been saying for years. Most plentiful source of both Vitamin D and DHA is fish, especially salmon and sardines. So, this should be a wakeup call for all strict vegetarians and vegans, who do not eat fish. Of course, one problem eating fish are the toxins from mercury, plastics, etc in our polluted oceans. Perhaps, wild salmon is less polluted? So, if you want to get your DHA from fish, best to get PURIFIED fish oil. For example, like the Barlean's Brand, which is sort of in the mid range price-wise, and claims to be " Fresh Catch, Omega 3 EPA/DHA Ultra Purified, Pharmaceutical Grade, with a stamped bottled date, " or something like that. DHA supplements are also available from vegetarian sources( algae ), but maybe more expensive. You can get some @ www.drfuhrman.com Vitamin D comes from both fish and vegetarian source also: D3 is from fish and supposed to be more absorbable. D2 is vegetarian and you need to take more of it than D3. Unless you live in sunny California, Arizona, Florida, etc, it may be wise to supplement vitamin D. Also, strict vegans, vegetarians should have their B12 checked and/or supplemented as a precaution. Here is an interesting story about a billionaire's diet from http://healthyweightloss4babyboomers.com/archives/1649 : " Over 2o years ago Mr. Murdock lost his wife to cancer. In his search to try to save her, using all his millions to research and try to find a cure for cancer he found out it was too late for her. But, the reason she got cancer was that they were simply not eating right. You would think they ate the best of everything. In fact God gave us all the best of everything. Genesis 1:29 states he gave all the fruit, vegetables, herbs, seeds, and nuts as the food that would be meat( food ) to us. So after spending millions David Murdock realized that his main problem was to eat a diet that consisted mainly of fruit and vegetables. They took a look at his average daily diet and he had an egg white vegetarian omelet for breakfast, a salad for lunch, and another salad WITH FISH FOR DINNER. Throughout the day he would have 3 or 4 fruit juice or smoothies. Now I have not spent millions of dollars but that sounds like my daily diet. It sounds very similar to what I advise everyone I talk to. What he did not say, yet they showed it, he is very active and he exercises regularly. " Food at Amritapuri: The food at Amritapuri is vegetarian, with exception of eggs which are provided at the western canteen. And the locals are fishermen; so little sardines are plenty available off the ashram grounds. Amma's father was also a fisherman and the great sage Vyasa was from a fishermen clan. So, something to ponder at: " Are all Hindus strictly vegetarian, or are eggs and fish an exception for some? " Amma Bless !
