There are several fish stories around Amma. Although Amma is basically a

vegetarian, her father was a fisherman; I don't know if that means the family

ate fish or not? Also, what about all the other Hindus in the area of Amma's

Ashram, some of which were/are fishermen? It certainly seems as if they do eat

fish.

When we were at Amritapuri, I was tempted by all the tiny little fish available

in street stands or drying on the beach; now, I think I should have had some but

didn't at the time.

According to Amma's biography, Amma did not eat fish normally, but did when an

eagle brought it to her while she was meditating continuously.

One story, that Amma tells, if I remember correctly is: Two Hindu vegetarians

were diagnosed with the same serious disease and were recommended by the doctor

to eat fish for some time in order to recover. One followed the advice and

recovered and was able to continue caring for his family. The other, remained

strictly vegetarian, and died leaving the family without a breadwinner.

And now, we have Dr Fuhrman's advice based on experiences with very strict raw

foodists or vegans who died from DHA or B12 deficiencies.

The most readily available source of DHA is fish or fish oil. And Dr Fuhrman

does recommend daily fish oil in serious DHA deficiencies with the additional

advice to get it free of toxins( mecury, etc). For normal maintenance, wild

salmon once or twice per week.

But, since fish is subject to various toxins due to pollution, Dr Fuhrman also

developed DHA from a toxin free vegan source for normal safer daily maintenance.

His overall warning is that VEGANS are prone to deficiencies in DHA and B12; and

everyone not getting enough sun is prone to vitamin D deficiency.

Hope that this info and options are helpful for someOne.

Amma Bless,

amarnath
