Guest guest
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/heart_and_soul.shtml In Heart and Soul this week Kati Whitaker meets young women in India whose bodies are dedicated to God as temple prostitutes. Joythi is one of these young devadasis, but the ancient Hindu tradition of dedicating young girls to the temple has come up against the modern horrors of AIDS. Joythi, her two small children and her entire family depend on the income she receives from bestowing her divine gifts on her clients. But the truth is that she is no more than a common prostitute, and as such is in a very dangerous profession. Award-winning documentary maker Kati Whitaker travels to the south of India to meet Joythi, and the small group of former devadasis who are tying to persuade her to leave the profession.
