Guest guest
This was written by Swamiji from an article in Matruvani On July 10th, 2001, Amma appeared on " The Today Show, " televised by NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation) from Rockefeller Center in New York. This programme, watched daily by hundreds of thousands of people in America, is the nation’s most favourite morning programme. " Why do you consider sorrow as the greatest Guru? " To this question posed by Ann Carey of NBC, Amma replied, " I have always looked upon sorrow as the light in the midst of darkness. During the last 30 years, Amma has had the chance to personally hear, feel and understand the sorrows of millions of people. Thousands become depressed because they do not know how to face and tackle problems and difficulties in life. But if this sorrow and the pain it brings are directed towards God, they get transformed into strength, the strength of pure divine love. This approach enables one to know and understand life in depth and detail. The consummation of this realization is God. " Amma continued, " Sorrow has a certain depth. If you have the courage to delve deep into the mind, rather than remaining on its surface, you will gain more insight from sorrow than from the momentary joys of happiness. " Amma has always taken this path. " Amma, why do you hug everyone? " This question was from the Los Angeles Times (June 20th, 2000). Amma replied with another question: " Does anyone ask the river, ‘O river, why do you flow?’ Does any child ask its mother, ‘Mother, why do you hug me?’ " " Amma, you hug everyone. But who hugs you? " BBC asked Amma this question (October 28th, 2000). " The entire creation, " was Amma’s reply. True, there are people who criticize Mother and Her mission, creating a hue and cry, like street dogs barking at the full moon. There is no point in telling them to stop whining and wailing. As our forefathers have rightly said, " Garlic will not lose its pungent smell even if it is raised in a bed of camphor and watered with rose water!
