om amriteshwaryai namaha,

[A devotee has asked why there is so much pain and suffering in pure

love]. " Because what is impure should become pure. All impurity should

melt and disappear in the heat of the pain of separation and longing.

This suffering is known as tapas. The Gopis became totally identified

with Krishna through this pain. Their pain was so excruciating and

intense that their individuality disappeared completely and they merged

with their beloved Krishna. The impurity is the feeling of `I' and

`mine,' the ego. " - Ammachi, Awaken Children, Vol.4 p244 (0218)
